I've heard that they're just a gimmick, that they really don't do anything. Kinda like the stickers that add 10hp to the ricers.

Most of them are just marine application bilge blowers which are used to exhaust gas fumes from boats. They were never intended to be used in an automotive application. You'd be better off hooking up a leaf blower to your carb. Don't waste your money.
Here ya go....

Peter, that looks like the top-of-the-line deluxe "Toro" edition electric supercharger with the MAF sensor and the really, really long 110V "safety-orange" extention cord. :P

We're developing the real thing at my work. I can't disclose details but they are in fact pretty cool looking. I figure I would need four of them for my 350. There is still a problem with them too that hasn't been solved. Your battery ain't big enough to power that puppy very long let alone 4!!! The alternator can't support it either. 8O

Home Depot currently has 100' heavy duty extension cords on sale for anyone planning on this performance upgrade. Believe it or not, I too am working on an affordable turbo system, it involves using a 50cc gas engine from a moped and a Hoover vacuum cleaner...so far it sucks.

Not to many poeple know it but there really are electric Turbo/Superchargers that really work. There are all of these guys ripping off persons by putting up plastic Bilge Blowers from boats and saying the flow 250cfm or 600cfm and guys are buying them because they don't know any better. But a REAL Electric TURBO CHARGER looks just like a real Turbo Charger (Made out of Metal, Not Plastic) with the Hot side where the exhaust goes through removed and a very high RPM electric motor is installed. 3 K or KKK from Germany made these and they were called the KKK K26 Electric Turbo. They work and some times you can find a used one. They don't make 1 or 2 or 3 pounds of boost like these others claim, but you have to put a waste gate or a blow off valve on them as they will make SERIOUS Boost like up to 12 pounds or more. Saab has also made them and is still looking into makeing another now. You can make one your self buy buying an old Turbo charger and doing a little fabrication and then get in a supply catalog and find a Electric motor that will spin at atleast 8000rpm or more to get about 5 pounds boost. There is the e supercharger and his motor is right on the speed but if he just did not use the Blow Trough Method and used the Turbo Charger TURBINE method his boost would climb from the 1 psi he gets to around 3 to5 psi which is where most engines can safely operate at for short times.
I know where a kkk is now used for a very good price and I am thinking of buying it. They cost about 1000 bucks new, but you lose all of the hassles of plumbing and it is so easy to install and is good for a 1/4 blast or for and extra boost on your towing vehicle when you need it. I am going to build one here soon and I am going to show how to do it out of used parts and put all of these guys who are ripping off poeple by putting Bilge Blowers up for sale for 159 bucks out of business. Those plastic things they sell can be bout for 29 bucks or less at the local boat supply or I can walk out side and get the one of my boat and send it to you for 159 bucks. Any questions on how to make a real one let me know as I will be wroking on one in the next 60 days. the kkk k26 is real and Borg Warner makes the Turbo now, I have the REAL Turbo Charger version on my Porsche, and they look just alike except one has an Electric motor on the back........Forgive my spelling, I am rushed/ can't see/ and can't spell a lic......
