I looking to get a 4th gen to fix up and wondering what the bumper to bumper length is of the gen 4's. Any links to info is appreciated. Trying to make sure it will fit before I go looking.

THe 4th gen's are classified as "Mid-Size" But I would classify it as very long. lol. I'll go out and measure in a few moments for ya.

Charles

EDIT: Actual length of my '76 is 17' 8". Hope this helps you.

According to the restoration package from GM the length of the 73 and I would think thru 77 is 213.2 inches or the 17 ft 8 inches from the previous post. You can get the complete restoration kit from GM free and there is a lot of very usefull information in it. The 800 number is posted on the board just use the search. Enjoy the lost generation. They are a bit hard to find parts for but fun. John

My 77 is almost 18 feet long. My wife is complaining about the space taken in the garage.

Why do they call this generation "mid-sized"?

Mainly they are called 'mid-size' because they were built on the intermediate platform of the Chevelle, Malibu, Monte Carlo, etc. Which were the Mid-Size cars from GM. Whereas the Caprice, Impala, etc. were considered the Full-Size cars. Also the Chilton manual (#28440) is listed as "General Motors Chevy Mid-Size Cars 1964-1988 Repair Manual" "Covers all U.S. and Canadian models of Chevrolet Chevelle, El Camino, Laguna S-3, Malibu and Monte Carlo; including SS models and diesel engines".

And for those of us with GMC Sprints and clones, this is the book you want instead of what the parts store calls for. The book at the parts store doesn't even mention the name "Sprint". Just a little heads up for anybody looking for one.

Much as I miss my original 1977 GMC Sprint, the present 1983 El Camino actually fits in my garage. Bigger is not always better.

This might get the 5th gens after me but I'm really not a fan of the 78+ models. I like gen 3 and but never have been too crazy over the 78+

I'm kind of biased after owning a gen 4 during my sr year of high school and early years in college.

Lets just say that if you have a 17' garage, don't close the door.
Despite being considered mid size, the 4th gen is one of the longest Elkys, with the exception of possibly the 1st gen. Anyone know the length from 1-5th gen? Would make an interesting comparison.

luckily my garage is 20x20 so a 4th gen should fit.
