: Pressed Lower Ball Joint Removal
1Fast65Elky 04-28-2004, 06:31 PM okay lol ive been at these lower ball joints for about 3 hrs top ones were
np at all came right out after a couple whacks, but these stubborn lower
ball joints my god they r pressed in so tight. I've used a big big bolt and
tryd to press it out using a nut and backing it off to add pressure but that
was a no go,still stubborn, of course whackin it didnt work....any ideas on
how i can get these stubborn things out. its a 65 elky doin both sides.
please if you have any ideas or tips chime in and help a knuckle buster
out, hehe thanks in advance,
Abe.
Tauric 04-28-2004, 08:09 PM heh was looking this up myself a few days ago,
i think they have a special tool for it, for '71 and higher the tool is a J-23742 don't know if it'll work on yours or what the conventional name is for that tool
 hope that helps
1Fast65Elky 04-28-2004, 11:17 PM still basically at the same point on that lower ball but i sayd screw it for
today and went on to the passenger side.....guess what LOL!!
after unbolting the shock compressing the spring undoing the tie rod and
the ball joint the spindle wont come free from the top ball joint lol even
busted out the pry bar and recieved nothin. im thinkin about gettin a ball
joint presser from harbor frieght n visa around 40 bux so that will solve
my 1st prob but im puzzeled on why the bottom a arm didnt fall and shoot
that spring at me like its supposed to lol. btw chained up the spring so i
dont get a cuncussion.
thanks for the reply Tauric :D , any one else have suggestions? im stumped
thanks in advance, Abe.
elcamino74guy 04-29-2004, 01:43 AM BAll joint press is the best bet. The one that looks like a big C clamp with a hole in one end is wha I got.. You;d be surprised how quick it makes the job. I got mine at Harbor Freight too. Also picked up a couple of different sizes of tie rod/pitman arm separators. The work much better than a pickle fork and a lot less dramatic that the old hammer trick. I never liked that one but it works in a pinch.
dennis68 04-29-2004, 10:42 PM BFH, hit the spindle right where the ball joint comes through. Hit it untill you can't swing the hammer. Most of the time it will "pop" after a few swings. I've had some at the wrecking yard that I had to take a break and come back to-they always break loose evntually. You need like a 48oz hammer. That little ball peen job wont work.
1Fast65Elky 04-29-2004, 11:46 PM thanks guys, and yup right after i went and posted that i decided to go bak out and fiddle with it some. jacked it up a little whacked that ball joint where its in the spindle and sure nuff came right out np, now i just needa get around to getting a bj press or mabey just take em down to the shop n havem pressed in, rather do it myself funner and cheaper 8) thanks again dennis, elky74guy, and tauric.
if only i hadda grand to throw around id slap some bags on it fbss while ive got all this apart... looks very easy to lay frame appears as if no step notch needed or link. both r there stock weeeeeee future plans.
Alchemist 04-30-2004, 05:26 PM BFH, hit the spindle right where the ball joint comes through. Hit it untill you can't swing the hammer..... That little ball peen job wont work.
That's what worked for me. But not just the BFH...i had to use the 5lb GBMFH!!! But it worked!
elcamino74guy 05-01-2004, 02:49 AM Glad my .02 was helpful. Isn't it a great feeling when you think the job is hopeless and suddenly it just all works out. Like some kind of adrenaline rush..
Good luck!
Tauric 05-03-2004, 04:23 PM note to self: get a big hammer
1Fast65Elky 05-04-2004, 03:50 AM heheheh yup BAFH got the job done, just waitin to get brake pads b4 i slap them wheels bak on. :onfire:
Tauric 05-04-2004, 10:49 PM takin mine to a shop to have em do it  took the flat side of a 36oz axe and put the bastard in a press and the damn bolt broke on me and the retaining ring won't effin budge, i'll see if the shop thats gonna sand blast em for me can pop the old ball joints out for me  almost 2 hours of pounding at 9:30pm in the garage... got the neightbors all pissed off heh
the plus side is i got my cardio workout for the year
1Fast65Elky 05-04-2004, 11:40 PM i grabbed a pipe, like 2-3" diameter put it over so it was touchin the outside of the ball joint but not the bolt and whacked away at the pipe oh yah i duct taped a big ass washer on top so i had more area to hit insted of tryin to whack the wall of the pipe.
Tauric 05-04-2004, 11:49 PM wish i woulda thought of that... i got just the pipe too oh well my hands hurt now anyway :-P
