I have a problem with long tube headers on a 85 Elky, they are hitting the a-frame on the passager side. Does anyone know if the engine can be raised any and if so do you have to raise the tranny mount the same? I am going to try trimming the a-frame some but don't think that will be enough. They are hooker for a g body and are ceramic coated, can you bend them any without craking the coating?

strange, how worn are your motor mounts? on some F bodies i have had to shim one side of motor and tilt it a hair. but never had any problems with g bodys

Hi gman,
Ceramic coated headers don't take well to a hammer as the coating is pretty brittle. If you are talking about making a dent in the tube for clearance, brace it with a cloth sandwiched between the work bench and the header and use a block of wood between the hammer and the tube to make the dent. It will stand a better chance of chipping less.
be careful how much you trim off the a-frame - that piece is pretty structural. The issue is probably the way the headers were manufactured, not so much how much the parts have worn around it. I have Hedmann headers on my 79 which fit great around the engine block and frame, but completely blocks the oil filter from being removed. I just bought a set of Doug Thorley tri-Y headers to fix this issue . . . we'll see how well they fit.

Thanks, I may have to go with shorty header to fix the problem

I have Hedman shortys on my '85. They fit easily. It did require a 90° fitting to re-install the oil pressure sending unit. Other than that the bolts for the collector tubes kept loosening. I solved that with a little spot weld on each nut.

II installed Hooker Comp Long tube headers on My 85 and the only place They touched was the pas side upper control arm at the rear mounting took my Grinder and removed a small ammount of the Big washer at the rear upper mounting, fits fine You shouldnot need to Beat on the headers to make them Fit :texas:
Thanks, thats what I'm going to try. Mine hitting in same place.
