I love elkys... I have had 3 of them over the last 10 years... But about 3 years ago i got a short taste of convertible, and i've been craving it since then...

So Last thursday night, I'm out cruising in the elky on some back farming roads, I came across THIS on the side of the road:

http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/data/500/489dsc00015-med.jpg

I stopped to look, figuring it would be around $8k or so(out of my range)
It had a for sale sign in the front window, said:
1967 Mercury Monterey (Convertible duh) Strong running 390- Needs carpet- $4450

I looked it over- Very decent, very solid looking car. Called back on friday set an appointment to go see it saturday morning... It drove as nice as it looks- I talked the guy down to an even $4k with a giant wad of cash.

Soooo- I guess I'm a ford guy too now! :D (Ben holds arms up to repell rocks being thrown at him)

You gotta understand though... This is a convertible, with a BigBlock in it, and it was $4k... Even if it is a ford/merc whatever, i couldn't pass that up! 8O

So here are some more pics i took of it this weekend...

Car is very solid... Someone had replaced the orig black carpet with a white one, which was mega dirty, so the guy had yanked it out- but had not yet replaced it. The bare floor boards showed absolutly NO rust- beautiful, like it just left the factory... Engine has been rebuilt, and runs strong- although has a bad exhaust leak on one side... and needs a tuneup & carb rebuild since it has a bit of an off idle stumble. Interior is all origonal and in pretty good shape- My upholstery guy is getting it next week to repair the few rips that are there and re-built the springs and foam underneath.

Anyway, I'm thinking about blacking out the grill, and throwing some 15x8 Centerline Telestars w/ RWL tires(like on my 70 elky) on it to give it little bit more of a hot rodish look to it...

My old(sold it 2 years ago, and regretted it every day since)1968 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 ragtop had fake cragars on it- and they really MADE that car....

I'm thinking they will do the same thing for the look on this car too. What do you guys think?

For refrence I found this one pic of a 68 galaxie(pretty close to what my car is) with the rims i want... http://home.comcast.net/~3wagners2/image3.jpg

So what do you guys think? Am i in the doghouse, or is this cool?

I've never been in a big block, convertible doghouse before! Gotta say its not a bad place to be!

I like it. I have a 66 Comet (2dr H/T) that my 16 year old and I are restoring. It'll be his first driver. (Lucky brat!) Nothing fancy.....a 302 running close to 350 HP (he thinks that ain't enough! 8O ) auto (C4). It'll be red with a white vinyl top and grey interior.

Here are some pics of a few decent ones.....

I don't know what it is and maybe it's just me, but 66, 67, 68 were some really great years for styling. Camaro, Comet, Fairlane, Galaxy 500, elky, chargers, road runners, coronets etc.

Lucky you. I love the classic cars. BIG BLOCKs are so much fun !!!!!!! I love the feel of being pushed back in the seat you get from putting your foot in it with a big block.

In the shop at work there is a 1973 Caddilace El Dorado Convertable top. This car has the 500 ci engine. It waighs over 6,000 pounds and still you can feel it accelerate. It is one fun car

Yep the cruisers are fun...My dad had a 1970 Buick Electra 225 with the 455 4 barrel. What a freeway car! Plus the best car a kid could have on a date. That back seat was bigger than our house couch! :P

So if and when your kids are old enough to drive don't let them take the new toy on any dates!

Definately a nice find , especially for $4K! If your going to replace the wheels, I'd go with something classy looking, it's a Monterey, not a Torino GT...maybe wire wheels and Vogue tires.

I like your new ride. I would say you’re not in the doghouse on these forums. Hell, your not trading in that exquisitely fine Elky of yours????

I personaly like almost all true survivor classics. In my mind, some of them are like works of art from an era long gone by. These classics can really take you back in time.

Your new ride looks great. The top, body, chrome, etc. look to be in fine shape.

Good luck with it. Maybe we will need a new forum or gallery for members "other rides"??????
