well i have run into a snag with my 81...i have a 400 small block with street headers hooked onto a 700r4 transminssion...THe problem is that now the shift linkeage wont reach the transmission..the car had a buick v6 in it with i guess whatever stock trans that came with it..What do i do now..Is there a certain modification i need to make this work..Looks like the linkeage needs a piece welded onto it to extend it...its a column shift. anyone know that is needed to fix this problem

They are mostly the same, go to a junkyard and get the linkage from any chevy vehicle. All you need the the stuff from the pivot ball to the shift arm on the tranny. Be sure that you check the position of park and the gears as far as possible. They are not going to be a one to one with the old 3 speed THM 350 or the 200 series transmissions so all the indicators will be off. Don't freak just deal with it.
I was thinking, mine is anyway, that the linkage is adjustable at the pivot, that arm will extend some about 1 to 2". You can also re-locat the pivot further back on the frame if you need to.
