Looking for some help on an 88 Monte Carlo SS F-41 steering box. This is off an G-body...... will this work on my 76 elky being an A-body? I think I will have to switch the connection fittings to metric. Any help would be great. Thanks, Pawp :???:

You can have hoses made up at a hydraulics shop to match the new box to your old pump. You could also buy replacement pump and hoses for the Monte application. However, I seem to remember another issue, with the input shaft being smaller in diameter on the later box. Details are foggy since it's been over 30 years ago, but IIRC, I had to build a hybrid rag joint to put a metric chassis box into an earlier "A" body car. Sorry I can't provide details. Back then, people would look for the 70's Trans-Am boxes, because they were a direct fit into the "A" and "X" body cars. Maybe you can try visiting Flaming River's site to see the size and spline count of the various steering box input shafts in their U-joint listings. Having swapped boxes in my '87 years ago to a Buick T-Type box, the improvement is definitely worth the effort. Many will tell you that you need to match the flow valve on the P.S. pump to the new quick-ratio box, but I've not done that to mine, and I've been happy with the swap for 17 years.

You dont have to have hoses made on the back of power steering pump there is a fitting with valve in pump take the valve and fitting from a late model pump and use p/s hoses from monte . As for the rag joint an 87 to early 90s chevy truck is a direct bolt on to late model box and early column .I used a jeep grand cherokee box has same degrees but more road feel there is a torsion bar in box a camaro z28 is 210 a jeep is 190 this translates to no 1 finger turning aka mush steering .As mentiond above the valve in the back of pump also effect this as later model boxes require more pressure from pump .Here is a link for valve modification http://jeffd.50megs.com/Pump_valve_mod_page.htm
Steering boxes are not all the same and have internal stops a gen 3 z28 steering box has limited turn radius compared to most . That the monte has 87 degrees of sweep so turning radius should be good as it will hit stops on spindle and not limit your turning radius .Here is a link with more info http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/ccrp_0901_gm_steering_box_upgrade/steering_box_difference.html

Thanks for all the info. You've steered me in the right direction and now I have research to do. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again. :smile2:

I also have swapped my steering box for the Jeep Grand Cherokee box. I went the route of replacing the fitting on the back of the pump and used a metric pressure hose from a 3rd Gen Camaro. In retrospect, I think it would have been an easier job to buy the Lee Manufacturing seat inserts that go on the box itself and keep the original hoses.
The pressure fitting for the pump is GM part # 29009894.
Whatever you do though... get new bolts! Mine looked OK... but I've seen pictures of bolts from other cars that had a significant amount of material lost to corrosion. No sense in risking losing total control if one or more bolts break. They're cheap enough.

I agree with using the inserts from Lee if I go this way. Your right on replacing with new bolts when possible. Thanks to all for your feedback. I've read a lot on this site but not used it for questions. The feedback has been great, thanks to all again.
