I've always liked the Elcos better than the Ranchero, ever since I was a kid, however I get a bit excited over just about all the Crucks. Yes, that includes the Rampage and the Brat.

I'd even like to own a Caddy some day. (VW Caddy, although caddilac would be nice too)

The Ranchero always looked like it had "big hips" to me in the last generation. They seemed to just look oversized like a Torino with a bed. I have only owned 2 Fords. The first never had a chance (used from my ex brother in law). The second was perfectly fine.....So I quit on a high note.

You're right Craig,
Those late Ranchos were "hippy" and heavy looking, not my favorite by a long shot. But they were great fun with a 460 under the hood! I recall a couple of them from my HS days.
Today, a fake-wood sided yellow 1978 Ranchero Squire (even w/460) might cause nausea in many folks. They were pretty cool back in the day, though, and folks actually bought them! The late 70's was a weird time for cars, and buyers tastes.:dontknow:

I'm kinda partial to the 60-63 Ranchos. I can't explain why as they're actually kinda homely, but I want one real bad. Wimbledon White with some tasteful, old school aftermarket wheels would make a great little cruiser (even with a 6-cyl, 3-speed).

The 64-65 Rancheros own the "cool" in the Ranchero line, IMHO.

As far as "other" crucks, I'd rock a Rampage or a VW Caddy in a heartbeat. :)
I love my El Camino, but I'm not a Bowtie Snob by any means. I love "cars" and have a soft spot for "crucks" of any manufacture.

BTW GM, I'm still waiting for a Maloo!!!! Make it happen!!!! Ya bastards.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSV_Maloo

The current Aussie Ford offering (Ranchero) ain't to shabby either:

I am a Ford man with an Elky. I had a 72 Ranchero GT and loved it. If I could find another one I liked and could afford I'd get it. The Elky and Ranchero serve the same purpose so what's the problem? Like that great American RodNey King axed, "Can't we all jist git along?"

I ALMOST ended up with a ranchero.... before I got my elky. The guy wouldn't come down on his price ( 3k) and I had to walk away. A year later I found my elco for a mere $800, it ran great and had a fiberglass toneau cover!! A blessing in disguise I didn't end up with the ranchero ( although it was rust free vs slightly rusty elco) Finding parts would have been a bummer and probably quite expensive :-O I presently own two chevy's ('05 montie and the '79 elco) but am not a brand nazi..The most reliable car, and most underpowered I have owned yet was my '97 FORD thunderbird!! and the fastest and least reliable was a '72 plymouth duster. The el camino has been quite reliable for it's age and the monty has had a few annoying computer glitches but nothing major... Each brand/ model has their pluses and minuses, just depends what you are looking for and what you've had the best luck with:smileyb:

Ford introduced the Ranchero in 1957 Based on a Full Sized car. In 1960, they re-introduced it as a Falcon model. Shame on Ford. I agree, the Torino based Ranchero was overweight. Too Bad Ford
Bloated * all * their product line. Give GM credit for the 78 - 87 El Camino, slimmed down and a Sports Car disguised as a Pick up truck. With the addition of Gas Shocks, and a Rear Sway Bar ... my 81 El Camino was one of the best handling cars I've ever owned. I bought it as a cheap car, kept it 23 years, put aprox. 200 K miles on it, and loved it to death. It is currently in disrepair, and for sale.

If I can ever get out of the ' rust bowl ' I'll buy another one. At times, I feel guilty about driving it during the winter, but overall, I have few regrets. The car was very reliable, and probably saved my life more times than I care to admit. You had to work to make it spin. I give the lightweight 229 CID engine credit for easy cold weather starting, making power where it does the most good, great Gas mileage, and a wonderful balance of weight distribution. If I wanted a Dragster, I would have bought one.

Unfortunatly, the ex-wife decided that before she left that she would add to my misery by taking all of my photos, Marine uniforms and discharge papers and arrange them just right on the front seat of my 78 Mustang II. She then threw a book of matches in the window and went back to Trailerparkinsaw. I really miss that Stang!

Jarhead , I had to laugh reading above what your wife did , envisioning what it would look like it on a T.V. episode of " My Name Is Earl " . I had an Ranchero back in the 70`s that I remember all too well . I was buying it from a friend at $150 a month . Many , many months later his wife said to him " Hey , hasn`t Lenny ever finished paying you for that car " . We checked and I had mistakenly paid him almost $ 1000 MORE than the $1500 he asked for ! He was too good a friend and I was too embarrassed to ask for a refund . It served me well as a truck while rebuilding a couple of my houses but I`m also sorry I ever sold my 70 Barracuda to pay for it . It ran great . The big hips description on the Ranchero is perfect and boy did it have the ugliest green factory paint job with a big yellowish side strip/panel on it . What`s that saying that before you can be old and wise , first you need to be young and stupid .

To add insult to injury, while I was at work delivering welding supplies, I saw her "boyfriend" driving around town in MY mustang! This was the straw that broke it. That night I went home early, pissed off like you wouldn't believe. When I walked into the bedroom to change clothes, i saw them both in bed. I went to my closet and started loading my Mini-14's 30 rd clip. She told him, " get yer a$$ outta here, he's a Marine and he doesn't miss!" As he ran down the stairs she commenced beating me about my head and shoulders. Being the gentleman that I am, I gently picked her up and placed her firmly in a chair and then chambered a round. As I opened the outside door he was speeding off in his Omega, so I squeezed off a coupla rounds into the rear quarter panel. For some reason I never saw him again. The next day, I come home to an empty house and my Mustang was doing its part to eradicate the neighborhood mosquito population. Such is life when an Okie marries someone from Arkansas. At least no kids were involved. Like I said before, I really miss my 'Stang!! That was 28 yrs ago.

Well, Jarhead.
I've been in that boat before-----back in 87

You and me both probably should have shot HER-----less people to eradicate that way.

She got away with my 73 Cutlass S, that I was extremely fond of.
But, when she stopped by to mention that her atty. wanted her to go after the house----she got a reply
she was not ready for.

"Tell your attorney to go ahead-----within 48 hours you will be dead and I will be locked up----and I have no problem with that."

That was the end of her attorney suggestions as it was not an idle threat----was a promise.

All ended well tho------a new husband cleaned her out and she lost her new car and home
a couple of years later.

How about an RanchElco ... I dare someone to cut up their Elk and combined it with a Ranchero..... it would be unique and awkward... I won't do it but I know someone insane enough would do it...

Anyway.. I think it is okay talking about Ranchero... same concept as the El Camino. I was actually thinking about buying one (but not if it meant selling my Elk).

To be honest, I think the 57-79 Ranchero's look better than the 80's El Camino's... I never really liked the design of '80's cars... or '80s music ... and awful fashions ... especially hair styles... YUCK! That was the era I wish I missed.

The Ranchero was cool cause it was a cruck. My older brother had one and it was pretty wicked. I really did like the smaller ones like the Brat, and especially the Rampage.

But nothing will ever be better than a GM.
