I have a 71 EL with the standard dash Bezel and long sweep speedo. With Idoit lights. I would like to replace it with a new Bezel and analog gauges. Has someone done this, Help with the wiring change would be great. I am willing to replace it with a dash from a Chevelle I have been told that they will fit I dont know if this is true. I checked Covans and they sell a dash for Chevelles. Will I have to change the dash wiring to do this?

The round gauge dash from a 70-72 chevelle, el camino or monte carlo will work for you. There are slight differences between the years but nothing that can't be overcome. For instance, the 72 year dashes have a fasten seat belt lite and the others don't. The 70 year dashes use green lettering, later years use white.

You can try eBay or most any chevelle/elcamino restoration supplier should be able to get you reproduction pieces. Yes the wiring is a bit different between all 3 years. Also even the round gauge dash came with idiot lites. If you wanted real gauges that was a special order, so watch for that difference also.

For wiring info on changing a lite dash to gauge see: http://links.chevelles.net/links/WorkShop/Interior/ Look for the Idiot light to gauge conversion link. Lots of work & time required but lots of folks have done it before.

You may need the wiring diagrams of both the SS and Custom.
I believe they're posted @ chevelles.net, but if ya can't find them, gimme a ping and I'll send you copies.

Good Luck!
