On my '72 there is a tag under the hood on drivers side w/ a series of numbers/letters. Can someone tell me what these are and where I could get them decoded. Thanks, Kyle

2Elkys, thanks for the info. good to know it. I was thinking about changing it back to original but I think I'll go w/ my pearl black exterior bucket seats and all black interior. But thanks again, Kyle.

Also, what is the difference between a 1972 El Camino and a 1972 EL Camino Custom? And also does this mean my car was the 018495th El made, becuase I used the VIN Decoder and got a different production number if the last 5 digits on the one in the windshield are the production #s. Thanks, Kyle.

An El Camino Custom was a more upscale model, they never came with a 6-cylinder engine in 1972 and had a little more trim and fancier options. Kinda like the difference between a Chevelle 300 and a Chevelle Malibu.
The sequence number on the body tag is a Fisher Body number and it's different from the last 6 digits on the dash, the dash number starts at 100,000 and indicates that the car was number such-and-such to come down the assembly line. I don't know if the Fisher number does tell that it was the 18495th made or not, my books don't tell me.

Iceman, ooh so that would explain the (In my opinion) goofy trim on the tail gate and body , and the 2 color paint scheme? Thanks for the info tho.

Was tilt steering a pretty common feature in '72?

It's hard to say, my '71 AMC Javelin SST had a GM tilt steering column and GM style keys as original factory equipment! I don't know about the El Caminos though, if that was a popular option. Your tailgate should have had the fake wood trim in the middle, personally I don't like fake stuff that is obviously fake.
