: McGyver solution needed
havaelky 03-24-2011, 07:41 PM Hello all, I know this is not the right way to do thing ,but here goes>>>>>
I going to change out my crossmember and I dont want to take exhaust apart from the manifold connector. I'm not ready to start a manifold/exhaust project (The bolts have been welded and are rusty I dont want them to break yet ,also the rest of the system is str8 welded to muffler no clamps.)>> So I thought I would cut exhaust pipe foward of the crossmember and disconnect the rear. R/R crossmember.
I'm replacing a hack-job on the home made crossmember due to all the CRACKS in the welds. Going back up I thought I'd just use a clamp>>> DynoMax #33229 from Jegs on both sides ,but I dont know if this will make a solid seal?
Any McGyver Solutions Welcome. ~~~~~ Yes at some point along the way I'll be looking for a complete exhaust system, but for now just want to get her off.... the jack stands that is.
Terminator 03-24-2011, 07:55 PM You can get exhaust extensions (up to 24'') from AutoZone or PepBoys. You might have to cut-out at least 4'' on your exhaust to insert an 8'' extension, and dont forget you need 2 exhaust pipe clamps for each pipe cut. Worse yet, you can use a flexable exhaust extension but they leak some and wont past inspection.
So says that MacGuyver Guy

goodcruiser 03-24-2011, 09:49 PM Get an exhaust pipe extention, then cut your old pipe accordingly you'll want it to slip into the rear section and butt it together in the front.Go to NAPA and get their SS band clamps naturally the appropriate diameter, they work on butt joints or slip joints require no sealer and are reusable and don't leak at least I've never had a problem with them.Once you use them on a slip joint it would probably be best to only use it on a slip joint.
zach01s 03-24-2011, 10:12 PM youre on the right track. be sure when you cut your exhaust its a straight piece with no bends or dents, itll make sealing it much easier. youll have the best luck cutting the pipe with a saws-all. those chain-cutter type exhaust cutters warp and distort the pipe so id avoid them if i was you. measure your pipes outer diameter and buy unions that have the inner diameter to match, you prolly have 2 1/2 inch od pipe. make sure the union says its inner diameter matches what you need.
they also make banjo-clamps for exhaust, they make wide ones for joining two pipes. all youde have to do is cut the pipe and when you go back together slide the two pieces of pipe into the banjo clamp and tighten it.
just google image exhaust banjo clamp to get the idea.

hotcamino 03-25-2011, 05:47 AM I have those clamps for over a year, they work GREAT!
darbysan 03-25-2011, 08:09 AM Maybe I'm not thinking straight yet this morning, but I'm thinking you might remove the cross member without cutting the exhaust. I'm thinking remove the bolts both sides, and remove the bolts at the trans. Support the trans with a jack. Could the crossmember then be 'rotated' enough to get the drivers side to clear the frame rail. This done, the other side may come up and over the exhaust? Might work, unless you already have duals:dontknow:

I think u might be able to work the old one out or cut it out if u are not going to reuse it and work the new one in. What crossmember are u planning on putting in?
Keyser Sose 03-27-2011, 05:12 PM Late 90s Crown Victoria and grand marquis have tubular crossmembers for trans with double humps for exhaust clearance. Cut 2 inches off each end, pound the ends flat, drill a hole in each end, and they practically jump into a G body!!! Cost you maybe $5-10 at pull your part.

havaelky 03-28-2011, 07:43 PM Well here is what i did.. I ended up cutting both exhaust pipes ,removing old x-mbr,installed new trans mount, new x-mbr (JEGS#55041050 )

The crossmember went in easy enough, the only thing I can see a Q. on is the E-brake cable. It's hitting
