: Tilt Column Ignition issues
HDElkey 03-27-2011, 12:10 PM For the past two months or so I've been unable to start my '79 with the steering wheel in the up position, but when I tilt it down, it starts up just fine. Now it wont start with the wheel in either position. I replaced the ignitions switch about 14 months ago to fix a similar problem, but I have a feeling that there is something else causing the problem. Any suggestions?
Thank,
Alex
Bryan59EC 03-27-2011, 01:46 PM The switch has some adjustment and must be located pretty close to perfect to get
both START & ACCY positions.
If by chance you do have the switch located correctly, the the other probability is not so easy.
The 'rack & rod' assy consists of 2 parts that are prone to wear---this is the 2 parts that connect the lock cylinder to the ignition switch. More often than not, the rack portion breaks and will not
pull the rod far enough to get the switch into "START"
Not a big deal to replace (I have done this 4 times in my 79 C-10), but is time consuming.
M Zeigler 03-27-2011, 01:48 PM I would start by adjusting the ignition switch, perhaps move the switch as far as possible one way or the other and adjust as you go, the position of the steering wheel should not affect the ignition switch, be sure to make sure the dimmer switch works properly before you wrap it up as they mount at the same place if my memory is correct.
Do you know if anyone else had it apart and the rack was not reinstalled in the correct position.

JimCamino 03-27-2011, 01:57 PM If I remember correctly from when I pulled parts out of my 82 Malibu, there's a metal rod that connects the ignition switch to a switch near the base of the steering column. If it was me, I would drop the steering column, disconnect the starter circuit and connect a continuity light, and play with the adjustment of the assembly until it's to a point where it's dependable. Or maybe it has something to do with the neutral safety switch.
HDElkey 03-27-2011, 02:47 PM Alright, I'll try adjusting the position of the switch and see what happens. If that doesn't do it, how do i go about fixing the "Rack & Rod" problem?
Also: When I drop the steering column, is there anything else I need to do besides undo the two nuts that bolt the column to the underside of the dash?
goodcruiser 03-27-2011, 03:42 PM Disconnect the cable to the gear selector indicator in the dash. While you have the column down grab the rod coming from the key rack and work the key to see if there is too much play or move the rod back and forth towards the switch and the key.
JJLT1 03-27-2011, 04:16 PM welcome HD
it does make a good theft deterant tho..
for right now you could add a remote start button, 2 wires to the starter,,
run it inside,,hide it under the dash,,and back on the road,,till you have time..:texas:
HDElkey 03-30-2011, 08:29 AM Update: Tried adjusting the ignition switch, broke/disconnected the linkage at the key cylinder and for the dimmer switch. Time to talk to my buddy with a steering wheel puller!
M Zeigler 03-30-2011, 02:56 PM HD,
It is difficult to explain how things are positioned inside the steering coloum, I don't think you broke anything, the dimmer switch rod just lays against the actuator on the top end of the coloum, the rod for the ign. switch isn't attached much better if my memory serves me correct. (it may hook in ) These two peices can be a huge PIA to get in position upon reassembly.
If you are going to pull the coloum apart take extra care to see where the rack and pinion are located before you dissasemble that part in the locked position.Their alignment is critical so that all the functions work , if it is off on tooth it will have to be done over. (school of hard knocks here)
After you do a few of these they get easier but the first one can be a challenge. A GM shop manual could be of great help with pictures and diagrams if you have never had one apart.
Good luck, keep us updated.
