Here's some interesting reading on oil filters, I used to use fram but i'm definitely not after reading this.
Here's the overview. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html#conclusion
Here's the recommended filters and ones to avoid http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html#conclusion

I've been using WIX filters for a long time. The rubber flapper on them lasts longer than others generally.
Its not so much critical with most filters if yoou change the filter when you change the oil. Keeping good clean oil in the engine is the important part. Royal Purple is probably the absoulte best oil bar None but on the same hand its also the most expensive.
Its also important to have a working PCV system, not the older drafting type but newer ones with PCV vlaves and venting on both sides is best. Without a good PCV then carbon builds up fast in the oil and it brakes down quicker, even with a good filter it creates problems and buildup in the engine.

Speaking of oil filters. Fram sells their regular filter for a few bucks. Then comes three more grades such as Double Guard, Tough Guard, Xtra guard, etc. The most expensive one retails for almost 10.00. Does anyone think the more expensive filters are worth the money?
Years ago, I worked with a guy who had worked in an oil filter factory. This factory labeled the same filter with several different brand names. This guy told me that the only difference in the expensive filters and the cheapest ones was the difference in the thickness of the metal in the exterior can.
I just buy the cheapest name brand filter available at Wal Mart but change oil & filter every 3,000 miles. When I changed my 305 with 200,000+ miles for the 350, the mechanic told me the inside of the engine was one of the cleanest he had ever seen.

If you are good about changing the oil and filter then you really don't need the expensive brands. Like I said I've been using WIX filters for a long time and Mobile1 so I go to around 5000/6000 between oil changes.
I don't think you gain much by getting the most expensive filter there is. Basically they are to keep the sediment and other contaminates out of the passages and away from the bearing surfaces. Most all will do that fine.
I've had filters (before I started using Wix filters) leak and even split on the outside and they were some expensive filters, I use to believe that the more you paid the better it was, that is just not true.
