hey all, ive got a big question i need help with . i got the urge while doing alot of repairs to itmy beat up '88 dakota 4x3 (thats different story) and busted out an old grease gun buried in the dust, loaded it up and greased as much of the front end as i could reach and U-joints. after it was done, i discovered it was lithium grease and it said not to mix it with old fashioned grease, and clean out with solvent before adding new. is this really a problem i need to stress more over or another tale like changing all batteries at once? do i now have a dangerous problem or can i leave it for awhile? i may get back on here tonight, or friday nite when i het home from working away and ill check for good news. hopfully i didnt make a critical mistake this time. thanks for any advice or reality with this. take care guys!!!

I hope it's not a problem because I did "exactly" the same thing.

smanofsteel, looks like we may need to get some special group rate health insurance...for both of us and our daily beaters. then again, theres always time for us both to be lucky. hope this is ours. take care!

You really screwed up sorry to say. I had a mechanic at my shop accidentally do that and we had to replace every part he greased. We fixed it right away because the mix of the two greases becomes one the most corrosive acids known to man. I was really afraid his drive line was going to fly out from under the car! In the end it cost me a couple of thousand bucks to replace everything. The worst thing was I forgot that had greased his muffler bearings the same day. The muffler and the muffler bearings flew out from under the car on the freeway! :poke:

i dont know what to do and how fast. i dont ahve the money to replace anything right now, and i have to drive it every day. can you at least help out by saying how long we have to take care of it? is it a rust problem? will it directly cause the tie rod ends to split? i swear evey time some of us even try to take the initiative to take care of anything it seems to get worse. all the time. i put it in the u-joints, tie rod ends, ball joints and a couple inner steering joints. wow...

I think TrannyMike is having a little fun with you. Just pump in the correct grease and it will push out the lithium grease. Should not be a problem for you.

Hey Doug, I hope I didn't get your heart pumping too fast! I thought the old line about the muffler bearings would be an obvious sign that I was joking around! GOT YA!!!:nanawrench:

In aviation, grease was a big deal in the '80s. The Falcon jets (French biz jets) used a different grease for various things, and kept changing the type for wheel bearings, after we bought a bunch of 5-gallon pails of the stuff. One was Mobil 28, at about .28 cents an ounce. What a bunch of crap, and I told them that, and used all of it up. It was the moisture thing about the grease that they were all panicky about. Strange bunch over there........http://www.elcaminocentral.com/images/icons/icon13.gif
