: OverHaulin's El Camino
80elcamino 05-04-2004, 07:51 PM The episode is over and one kid better be very HAPPY! :D
N E Way here are some pictures from the show.
Link to the pics in my gallery (http://www.elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album180&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php)
BTW what was your favorite part of the show?
Any particular parts or mods you want to make now?
86camino 05-04-2004, 08:34 PM the chick that host the show, nah but on the real i enjoyed the whole show especially when the car was done. it was pretty sweet.
dwindham 05-04-2004, 10:00 PM Good show. I got it on tape. It was great timing for me. I had just got home from checking out a 1974 SS Elky I'm considering getting.
vega_guy_76 05-04-2004, 10:34 PM They took my idea! I had planned on removing the bed trim on my '76 and welding in steel replacments to remove the trim completely like they did. Guess I know how the end product will look now.

leichler 05-05-2004, 08:41 AM Chip Foose is a master! The finished Elky is almost beyond imagination. Interesting that the thing causing the most trouble was the header installation. They started with the headers installed and the engine on the picker, pulled the headers for the install, couldn't get the headers to fit. Went looking for headers that fit and they ended up with Hedman. If it caused the experts that much trouble, what does it say for the weekender? Somehow there needs to be a better way of learning what will or won't suffice. :D
dwindham 05-05-2004, 08:45 AM hard to believe that you can fit a 454 in there yet a 350 with headers caused them troubles.
lowelcam96 05-05-2004, 10:43 AM I saw it last night too, The paint job was an ace, it had the beach theme to it with blue grey colors..tight. My jaw dropped when they replaced the motor, at that point I was jealous.
But I was glad El Caminos still have popularity, even in young kids that say "That's not my ElCamino!, Where is it!" , then having enough presence to make everyone cry..the El Camino that is :P
rushgator 05-05-2004, 10:47 AM Foose is a master. That Elky turned out perfect. How much do you think a Foose Elky would sell for? 50k? Higher? Not counting the labor, it looked like at least 30k of parts went into it. That is one lucky kid. It's so good, I'd be afraid to park it anywhere. I'd have to buy a beater for daily driving.
bigjames4xl 05-05-2004, 01:20 PM Foose went right after the biggest appearance problems with the 4th gens(in my opinion)the energy absorbing bumpers!!! UGGHH!!! The Laguna facia and narrowing/relocating the rear bumper made it look shorter, a good thing I think!
I had a 75SS454 that was white on white with black stripes, pretty nice ride!!!
Jimmyfizzy 05-05-2004, 02:22 PM I just wish someone would do all that to my 1980. {It was stolen last year} and I'm just this year getting to it and finding out what I need to replace under the hood. I can't afford to just go out and get everything it needs. Doors, all the interior, crome, tires and wheels, tail gate. Would it be wrong to replace the 305 with a 350 ?. Do you know of a shop that makes seat belts ?.
2-Elkys 05-05-2004, 04:27 PM Seven days of working with those pros. plus parts. bet thats a 100,000 cruck. But damn it is good looking! I enjoyed the show.
daves77 05-06-2004, 04:17 AM I am doing my body work now and I was going to ask the group about removing the bed trim. Since I missed the show I have to find a copy of the tape.
I am glad to see they chose the best looking Generation for their makeover. At least in my oppinon the curvy body style of the 4th Gen looks best. When I bought my 77 I had no idea parts would be such an issue.
The only thing I am not crazy about is the large diameter wheels. I guess I am too old school.
Dave
80elcamino 05-06-2004, 05:12 AM I have a digital copy of the show. I'm mainly looking for a place to put it on the web for download. Anyone a volunteer?
dwindham 05-06-2004, 08:01 AM I can probably help out. I'm a network admin and have many resources for web servers and high speed connections. How big is the file?
I've got a 3mb pipe to the internet here at my disposal. Let me know where/how I can get it and I'll see what I can do.
cmcdesigns 05-06-2004, 08:38 AM Dave,
You wont be able to see much on the show on how we shaved the bed trim. Its edited quite a bit. We cut a section out every 4 inches and then welded it up, then cut another 4" and welded up and so on. By doing in in sections it keeps the rails from not splitting wide open and seperating. It was a bit of work but as you can see, the end result was great.
Craig 8-)
dwindham 05-06-2004, 08:55 AM Looks like we have a new member! Welcome. I wonder if you could put a rolled rear pan in place of the bumper like they did on the 90s chevy trucks.
Use the same lights from the bumper just move them in and fabricate the metal/fiberglass.
daves77 05-06-2004, 09:07 AM Thanks Craig
The only other questions are (since I have not seen the show) is: If all you did was remove the trim, cut the mounting flanges off, and weld it up (4 inches at a time), how did this effect the fit of the bed cover? Also which bed cover did you use?
I plan to use my 77 El Camino as my primary business vehicle. I must have a bed cover to carry all of my test equipment.
That is one wild ride.
Dave
chevydude 05-06-2004, 09:49 AM I finally watched the tape of Tuesday's Overhaulin', and i must say i was impressed with Chip Foose's work. He didn't do anything TOO radical to take away from the original shape of the Elco (really like the addition of the Laguna nose and the modified bumpers). I'd say the finished product looked pretty awesome. Those guys did one HECK of a job ( and in only 7 days!?...geez).
cmcdesigns 05-06-2004, 09:51 AM What was edited out was we made a custom bed cover that fit inside the bed rails. It was built out of square tubing and then skined in aluminum. Then it was covered in material. It was hinged in the front and then uses gas shocks to hold it up.
Gozer 05-06-2004, 11:49 AM You know, it would be kind of neat of TLC to release a 'director's cut' DVD of each episode that had more of what was done to each car. I assume TLC/Discovery is the owner of the intellectual property. So much is done to each car that cramming the overhaul into a single hour, especially when large chunks are taken up with storyline elements, means lots of interesting things get dropped out. The bed treatment of this ElCamino being a prime example.
I bet a lot of folks out there would pay $25+ for a 2-to-3-hour DVD that showed more of the detail for whichever car was their main interest. It wouldn't even need a lot of production work (although I'm sure the producers would want to do some fit-n-finish, it really should be basically just a matter of tacking on more footage from the shoot). Not just a DVD of just the broadcast episode (I'm sure that's coming for $21.95 anyway, but my VCR will suffice there), but something that puts back in some of the stuff that didn't make the final cut.
I will probably drop TLC a letter suggesting just such a thing. Anyone else who thinks the same should do so also. I can't help but think that, across all the viewing community (including fans of the other cars, of course) there is enough demand to make it profitable.

Was it just my imagination or was the it an editing mistake to show that guy having to hold the hood open? Looks like stronger hood springs were needed for the modified hood.
80elcamino 05-06-2004, 01:43 PM The file i have is a 612 mb file. I was encoded for VCD use so it is in the mpeg1 format. I have Cable so if you could give me ftp access (i guess anonymous) would work, I'll upload it.
Email me if you can help cause i'll bet these guys would d-load it.
Guy's would you download a 600+ megabyte file and watch it?
I'd hate for this work to fall on deaf modems. :-D
cmcdesigns 05-06-2004, 02:04 PM Big James,
We had the springs powdercoated and it wasnt the best idea. It made it impossible to close. So we used some other ones at the time because TIME was running out. Since the show, it has been replaced with new hinges and all is good.

I just had to pick on that a little!
You guys did a great job and I enjoyed that show!!!
I wish I could win the Lotto, then I'd have Foose and you guys do a road handling style Willys for me!!! :D
cmcdesigns 05-06-2004, 04:22 PM oh Thanks. We worked long hours, we figured we could get away with the hood springs then anything else to meet the deadline.
80elcamino 05-06-2004, 04:39 PM Hey cmcdesigns!
did you work on the elky that was on the show?
If so I'd love if you could have that kid join the ECC. We'd also LOVE :-P to see better pics of the whole project if you or the kid has some.
cmcdesigns 05-06-2004, 04:50 PM Yes, I did work on the El Camino for Overhaulin. Not sure if he would join, hes more of a beach surfer then a web surfer! (sorry, just playing bad pun). The next time I talk to him I will mention it. I have pictures if there is a place and a way to upload them here.
elcamino74guy 05-07-2004, 02:58 AM I missed the entire damn thing. What's worse is that I've got a 74! I hope they show it again soon. I don't get control of the remote on TUesday nights and only one TV has a SATellite hookup.
Maybe TLC can do a memorial day marathon or something and show all the episodes in a row. I'd be drawing blood if someone tried to take away the remote during that.
Car looks great. Better than I could ever hope for even with all my work and bloody knuckles. Hell I even broke a finger on the damn thing changing a torque converter on it once. Still finished the job though. Broken finger just made me madder
:) :) :)
80elcamino 05-07-2004, 05:18 AM They repeated it last night so look in your local guide for a repeat near you..
If you dont have one this is what I use. >>> (http://www.excite.com/tv/data.jsp?f=1)
If you still want it, i have a copy on my computer and I'm trying to find a place to put it for download. Maybe I'll put it on Kazaa; wha-duya think?
dwindham 05-07-2004, 06:47 AM I should have an IP address for you to upload it too here shortly.
edit: PM and email sent with info for FTP site for you to upload to.
cmcdesigns 05-07-2004, 08:41 AM The Overhaulin El Camino will re-air on Sunday
rushgator 05-07-2004, 10:03 AM Yes, I did work on the El Camino for Overhaulin. Not sure if he would join, hes more of a beach surfer then a web surfer! (sorry, just playing bad pun). The next time I talk to him I will mention it. I have pictures if there is a place and a way to upload them here.
Feel free to upload any and all pictures you have of the project in the 4th gen gallery on this site! We'd all love to see them. I watched it again last nite just to see what I may have missed. Which guy are you? I looked for anyone who had a cmc shirt or said something about cmc, but I may have missed it if you did. Anyway, we're glad you are here! Which GM crate motor did you use? Was that a ZZ4?
cmcdesigns 05-07-2004, 10:52 AM I was wearing all black. My CMC Logo was kind of small. Hard to see on TV. I was the one talking about the hood bracing and a few other things. I will see about the photos here soon.
dwindham 05-07-2004, 11:47 AM That hood was sweet. There's not too many options for custom/aftermarket hoods for 4th gen elkys.
cmcdesigns 05-07-2004, 12:34 PM I posted a few pictures that I had of the Overhaulin El Camino in the 4th gen gallery.
dwindham 05-07-2004, 12:49 PM I wonder what they did with the leftovers? That elky looked to be in pretty decent shape before tearing it up.
rushgator 05-07-2004, 01:59 PM CMC, thanks for posting your pics. Very, very nice! Does TLC plan to post up a list of all the parts that went into this build? I'm sure the sponsors would be in favor of that.
cmcdesigns 05-07-2004, 02:36 PM TLC did post a list buts it not all that great. I think it should be in more detail and list more sponsors for sure.
Not sure where all the old parts ended up. It was in ok shape. Many layers of paint on it, rusted out floors because the rear window leaked. Rusted out bottom passenger side door. We spent two days straight with about 8 people just working the body and getting it ready to paint.
rushgator 05-07-2004, 03:50 PM I agree. I guess TLC figures most people don't want all the details, down to every last nut and bolt, like we do.
Not surprised you had rust issues. The 4th gen is notoious for having rusty floors and door bottoms due to poor drainage. It did'nt help that this was a beach car, either. My first 4th gen that I drove in high school in Daytona Beach, FL had nice big holes in the floor, so I can understand how bad it must have been.
spy007 05-11-2004, 11:51 AM I would like to download this from whoever has a copy, I have a dsl connection at about 700kbps. thanks!
72ss454Florida 05-11-2004, 01:09 PM I will watch the show this weekend as I really enjoyed the 71 Chevelle they did before. But I was hoping their first Elky would be a 3rd Gen....say a 72....like...say....MINE
anyway, after watching Jesse James destroy a 71 SS 402 to make a damn demolition car out of it on Monster Garage (which made me wanna puke!!! ), I am glad to see a show like Overhaulin' that treats these babies right.
And with a name like overHAULIN'.....it should have Elky's on it, right?
bigjames4xl 05-11-2004, 01:59 PM after watching Jesse James destroy a 71 SS 402 to make a damn demolition car out of it on Monster Garage (which made me wanna puke!!!
Jessie James is an idiot! A rich idiot, but still an idiot, and contrary to popular belief he did not invent the wheel!
The only thing that impresses me about him is his ability to fill his pockets with money from the wannabee bad ass bikers in LA LA land!
ElCafreak 05-15-2004, 03:06 PM Yea that was one sweet Elky when they were done. I hate chip, he makes it all look so simple. lmao If they took my elky for a week and strung me along like they do some of those people, somebody might die! he he he
elcamino74guy 05-19-2004, 01:04 AM About 5 years ago out here in Mesa, AZ I saw a 4th gen El on a dealers lot that looked pretty trick.
It was bright yellow (not my first choice but it was well done) BUt what was unique was that it had the laguna front nose and the taillights were relocated to either side of the tailgate kind of like the old Ford LTDs but frenched in. The bumper was replaced a a full roll pan. It looked really great and someone definitely spent some bucks to get it that way.
Had a 454 in it.
8)
I really liked what they did on Overhaulin .... that brought a tear to my eye. I've been websurfin to see what ECs are going for nowadays, and saw a really unique custom.......a 74 with a studebaker front end....now THAT was wierd.
n1earnhrt 05-20-2004, 08:15 AM When are we going to be able to download it
dwindham 05-21-2004, 09:06 AM Sorry things have been busy here at the office but it should be available for download now.
http://209.184.70.119/
Its the only file there.
Good luck and let me know if you have any troubles.
The box hosting it is just a little XP box on a 3mb connection to the internet.
