It's been almost 10 years since I owned a 4th gen and today I should be picking up what I think is a nice find. I've located a 1974 SS El Camino. Origianlly from TX and as far as I can determine its a pure TX elky. Its got a 400 with 2 barrel carb under the hood and a TH400 tranny. Cragar SS wheels and its white with black interior. VIN verifies the 400/2barrel and the SS interior and grill all look original. According to a source here the 74 camino brochures indicate the SS option available for the 350 and the 454 so this one could have been a special order.

I'll post more pics when I get it home and cleaned up and any more info I find on it.
It does need some TLC but runs pretty well and has been driven regularly for the past few months. Originally I saw it on ebay at the end of 2003 and kept in touch with the owner. He traded it to a friend that is now expecting a baby and getting rid of some toys. The price is right so it should be in my garage tonight.

Congratulations! I checked out your photos the other day and it looks solid, a good foundation for a project. I've heard that 4th gen. Elky parts are somewhat difficult to locate and not much is supported by the aftermarket, but I hope you won't have too much trouble. Hang on to that 400 engine, it may be a slug in current form but it has a lot of potential.

Thanks. Yeah I've already had one local person wanting to see if I'd sell that 400 motor. I think with some new heads, intake, and carb it should be running a lot better.

Looks like a good solid start. No rust is a key issue for sure. I look forward to seeing your progress on it.

Those '74 SS had a real nice "stance" to them. They just look like they are moving even while standing still.
I've seen a few '73's and '74's all redone and they look great. I love those buckets and console.
I can imagine what yours will look like when done. I'd love to have a second Elky like that.
Keep the progress pic's coming. Good find.

Man that looks real nice!
Very clean on the outside and inside.
Plus if it does have a 400 in it, you'll love it; I know I have fun with mine!
Please post your progress with anything you do and keep us updated.

Its home safe and sound. So far no major signs of rust. Some surface stuff at the bottom of doors, behind the tires etc. Looks like it is a respray and was originally a black on black elky. It does seem to be a 400 with a 2 barrel. I've got some electrical stuff to sort out with the signals, etc. I'll get out there tomorrow and clean it up and take some new pics. I'm not sure if 74 is supposed to have catalytic converters but they arent there and I'm not putting them on :) Not sure what size cam but it has a little lope to it. I'll try and get a recording of it tomorrow with the laptop.
Here's a few pics of its homecoming.

And yes all three of those are mine. They will get to do some sanding when they get a little older :)

I gotta get back under it and try to find the axle ID but the 10 bolt pumpkin has a little silver tag that says use limited slip oil so I'm guessing that was an option or standard on the SS? My 77 was a one wheel wonder.
