I have a 1981 el camino that I have had a new paint job and interior 80 percent done. I was about to instal a stereo system and discovered that there was a water leak in the rear cabin storage area, it was on both sides and near the front area, now i couldnt see anything obvious and was hoping that this is a common problem and some one could help me. Thanks

I have seen a few like this, the seal drys out around the glass letting water in. Take the trim off, sprinkle baby powder around the area where it is leaking and gently spray water on the window. The powder will leave a trail back to where it is leaking.

I had the same/similar problem with my 77. The floor behind the drivers seat would be wet, but nothing else. I took it to the body shop, they popped the outside chrome trim off from around the rear window. They expected that the window opening/flange was rusted, and they were right. There is a metal panel that makes the front of the bed and another that makes the back of the cab. The water was coming in around the window trim, running between them and leaking onto the floor. A wet carpet in not a nice condition.

We cleaned what rusted metal was left, painted it with primer, replaced the gasket/seal and the chrome trim. I then got some clear silicone caulking and "sealed" the outside of the window. After the silicone has set up, I cut away any caulking that showed.

It has been two years, you can't tell what I did, and the leak is gone.

Sometimes we have to improvise,
