Hi I am new to the site and am on the verge of getting a 68 SS 396 4spd 12 bolt car for a father son restore. I have done a 67 SS camaro when he was younger. Now we want to do one together and found one that is stated to have a period correct motor apparently out of a 66 caprice 396 325hp 2 bolt. the car is far from me but the pics look good and the it is a 13880 car but it has two piston disk brakes and a few other items that I am not clear about on the tag.
Will the motor in it devalue the car for a restore? also any help with the tag would be great, I know most of it

ST 68- 13880 BF 10679 Body
765 217 B90 F2 paint
I was told it was built in Fremont, Ca. has front two piston disk brakes bench seat no A/C 396 4 spd 12 bolt stock no rust all there current title and reg was stored in a barn and brought back to a daily driver. Pictures document everything said but no sure what a fair price would be either (subjective I guess).
Thanks in advance

Here is a site that will tell you most everything about the data plate - and other information about the '68. I hope it helps. '68s are somewhat special to me!...............Ken

Thanks Ken been there and nasty z 28 first before asking trying to determine if car had the disks and trying to define the 765 trim code I know its a SS but the 217 shows pontiac bench or something weird. Also want to know what the B 90 is the car has the lower rocker area black so I wonder if the B 90 signifies the rocker then the F teal and the 2 black vinyl. Any possibility to determine anything else on it.
Thanks again,
Steve

I don't remember where I went, back a few years ago, to break down all the different numbers on my '68. Lot's of them, as I remember. Mine has the two-piston calipers. I had to send them off to get rebuilt, a place here in Texas, cost a BUNCH (~$500) to get them rebuilt. I hope yours are good!
As far as price, well, it's gets very subjective, and to me its all about 1) year, 2) condition, and 3) options. I think late 60's stuff is commanding some pretty high prices these days, and I don't just say that because I own and prefer them - just go cruise ebay or try to find something late 60's on craigslist. After that, well, its 'how wore out and rusty is it'. Options bring up the value big time, and the biggest bang is the SS. Then, does it have (presuming a 68SS): factory tach, remote mirror, tilt, power steering, power brakes, power windows, 4 speed (huge one here), air conditioning (huge one here), a 396 (I don't care about period correct, they all are in my book, but numbers matching is real important to some folks), bucket seats, console, 12-bolt. Those are all the options mine has, and there are probably others out there.
Get us some pics, options, condition, and I'd offer an opinion on value.
Good luck!

i think the b90 refers to the window moldings.
I was just looking into the same thing on mine and thats what I came up with.

thanks Doug and others I think your right the more digging I did I came up with the 795 meaning black int and the 217 meaning bench seat and the B 90 is window molding and how did I figure this out? I saw a build sheet on the site referrenced by Ken from Fremont that called a B-90 window molding. So I guess the 10679 if added tp the 13880 and then a Z then this would be the vin. Thanks all I have not purchased the car but hope to do so for everything minus the motor is numbers matching. I have only viewed pictures which have been very detailed and correct to the description provided so I can only state that I know there is no buckets ot center console which we prefer not sure about tilt but it does have the tach between the two clusters. No mpower steering windows or a/c which my son really wanted but I can not find anything else near the price that is a true ss 4 spd. Seems there is several auto SS cars around for a car like this is 8K reasonable with primer no rust and a daily driver?
Thanks again,
Steve
765 217In the 1968 model year there was a problem in sourcing materials for Chevrolet seats and thus they had to substitute materials from another GM A-model and this second trim combo # 217 is from either Olds or Buick or?. Its actually common to find this in 1968 model Chevelles.
Why there was a problem is not know. It was not a GM strike as the seats are built to order in the final assembly plant.
