Hello everyone!
I live in Norway and just bought myself a Choo choo custom 1987 SS El Camino. There are a few engine problems and I want to fly to the USA on June 19th and buy loads of parts and things that I`ll need now and for future problems .....which I presume will happen. I will fly anywhere to the USA, but can anyone tell me the best place or advise me where to go. I`m thinking of Los Angeles or New York.

I am also having trouble with the stupid Norwegian government for vehicles. I was stopped in a road control and they said the steering wheel which is a Dino...and presumably original from the CCC company was not legal without certification. What I need is a confirmation that this is original. Can somebody help me with that one?

I`m wondering what is the best motor oil to use. Should I stay away from synthetics or should I just use mineral. If so, should I just use 5W-30 which the oil cap tells or maybe one of you has a better hint.

Hope to get some good advice!

Thanx in advance.

Hiya!
Thanx for the info. I guess I`ll be checking how much an airfare will cost to that place.
I really don`t know what more to ask for yet as my dad is using the vehicle. But they will come.
-Tor

P.S I hope I`ve done this right replying on the site. I guess I`ll learn as I go.

Hello Tor, and welcome to our club!

I love to hear that one of our European friends is coming to America to spend money! But we do want you to be satisfied and get your El Camino in the best shape possible. So you need to do a good bit of planning before you come here.

First: Put your car on the lift and inspect everything possible that might need repairing and take plenty of digital photos that you can post here at ECC to get your technical questions answered. Make a good list of all parts needed and any custom accessories/improvements you might want to have.

Second: Contact all of our preferred sponsors and get a copy of their catalogues. This will let you know what items are available and compare prices to get the best deal. All of them give discounts to our members. Most of their catalogues are also available on line, but do get the actual paper catalogue so you can go through it over and over while making up your "wish list." I will provide a list at the bottom of this message.

Third: Contact our European Regional Director Maikel Joosten of The Netherlands who knows everything about fixing El Caminos in Europe. He has a group of about one hundred Elky owners who can share parts and advice with you. His email address is: royalknight@hetnet.nl

Fourth: Check frequently with our members about planning your work and getting free advice. Read our past posts on technical topics under the "Forums" section of this website.

Fifth: Come on over and bring your money, lots of it! Try to plan your trip so that you can attend one of our cruise nights or shows and see other El Caminos and their owners. Best regards, John Harris

Tor;

Just to be on the safe side you'd better check in to local tariffs and taxes on imported automotive parts. I've heard a lot of the European countries are pretty tough on these items...

Yeah you have no idea what they are like here in Norway. The Norwegian postal system is worse than the nazi`s. They want to suck you dry for everything.Even though we are smimming in oil and pay outrageous taxes we have to pay duty on items which is based on a certain amount which was set in 1974. And they still haven`t increased the free limit!! How much of a stupid country is there........and I wonder why I`m still here...... Thanks anyways for the caution.

'87 Choo Choo!!!
Very Nice!!!

I think I would find a penpal over here to send you things that you need!
(maybe a way around the tarriffs) They don't examine packages like the Nazi's? Do they?

Denne guy som postert over er ikke den eneste som taler Norsk. Likevel jeg vet ikke om De er interessert, men jeg pinstripe, og jeg har lave priser. Det anbringer den avsluttende berøringen på noe som helst. Godt hell finner deler.

Ya, I speak Norwegian too buddy. Tor, that's an awesome name. Anyways, good luck with what I said.

All you guys are so funny!!!
I know what you mean about Walmart, but what about McDonalds at Los Angeles Int. Airport........you either have to know Spanish or just point at the item you want!! Kind of annoying ain`t it in an English speaking country.

And now my parents are moving back to Canada so now I can smuggle my goodies through him.

By the way... My dad is a serious restorer of Zundapp KS601 motorcycles. Any of you who might know someone got parts laying around and want`s to get rid of it??

Thanks again fellow members.

I was born in California. Upland, actually. Then I lived in Rancho Coucamounga for a while. It's been so long, I might have spelled that wrong.

Cucamonga, however I prefer your spelling.
I also was born in goofy sunny So. Cal. at St. Lukes Hospital in Pasadena.
I split that scene daddy-o, back in '85. The grooves weren't right anymore so I left.
California is too a State, as much as Texas is a state, just that Cali is more a state of confusion and creatively stupid laws which are being Nationally accepted.
California tho can be TWO states split at Oakland.
Miami is a location all its own and can be a "state" unto itself, of course Florida isn't anywhere I wanna go to again, so I really don't care.
I now live in NC which means Not California. :P

I read about which oil to use. Synthetic oil is only really beneficial if you have a newer motor that has always run on it. One oil change without it and it does not work the same. If you have it there just use 10W 30 Max life (if you have more than 75,000 miles) I use it along with Lucas oil additive. It gets hot in the summer and single digits in the winter and have had no problems thus far in three years!

I guess when you are hungry you just have to put up with being annoyed. For you other people that are bother by people speaking Spanish, English is our official language, but by no means is it our only language that is spoken. I myself don't feel threaten when people speak English,German,Japanese or any other language. In IMO people that do are insecure or paranoid.
