Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of coolant is used in the A/C of a 1987 Caballero? R-12? R-22? Something else? I'm starting to price a recharge and would help if I had the right kind. Also, how much do I need?

Originally your car would have come with R-12 in the system. However due to recent environmental concerns, it is no longer legal to possess or sell the stuff without a license. If the system is completely empty and still or was recently serviceable you can just buy a R-134a conversion kit. If you still have refrigerant in the system you should take it to a certified professional and have it recovered. Might cost a bit, but you are doing your part to save the ozone. The R-134a you can do yourself with no problem or you can pay someone to do it.

Wal Mart sells a change over kit. It sells for about $40.00 and has everything you need to convert.

Has anyone used this kit???? Sounds like a GREAT "deal" if it'll do the job!
