I'm starting to look around for a 5th gen elky to drive around in while I do work on my 76. Are there any big differences from 78-87? Is any particular year more favorable than another? They are plentiful in my area in the $1000-$2000 range.

Not much difference in the years, but the later have an overdrive tranny. I would think the the more favorable would have to be the choo choo customs.

I think the earlier ones also had the 350 over the 305.

Yes, The 78-79 are the only ones that could have a 350 factory, but alot of them have aready had a swap anyway. The best thing about the 78-79 is alot less emmisions stuff if you have to worry about it.

I have a 78 and I really like the front end. No emmisions crap (PO must have removed it all) but mine has a boat ancker engine "305". No biggie, because a nice little built 327 is going to find it's way in there. 8)

I've heard that many 5th Gen produced in the the later years (1986-88) were actually manufactured in Mexico. I have the build sheet for my 81 so I know it was built in Fremont, CA. Anybody know if this rumor is true?

I believe that '85 on was made in Mexico.
