: Stupid question
I bought a 78 El Camino a few months ago. It has some minor issues, so I haven't been able to drive it much. Also sence money is tight right now, it's sitting. Anyways, my stupid question. Is the key for starting the car the same one as the door locks ??? I only have the one key for it and I'm too lazy to go out too it right now (Cold rainy, ...not a nice day.).
dwindham 05-13-2004, 03:11 PM All the old GM stuff has a round key for the doors/trunk and a square/rectangular key for the ignition. If you only have an ignition key you can buy replacement lock cylinders that should also come with a new key.
camino83 05-13-2004, 04:15 PM Most of the time on my 83 the ignition key will work just as well as the door key for unlocking it. Shouldn't happen...but it's just that worn. Oh well, less fumbling for me (No stock keys...2 square replacements. So confusing)
Wes Turner 05-13-2004, 06:49 PM The Eky definitely uses two keys.
If you want an even dumber question-
Where are my keys?"
;-)
Eric
60ElCam 05-13-2004, 08:43 PM Before you replace your locks, you can take them out of the doors and bring them to a local locksmith. They can re-key them for a fraction of the cost to replace them with new . . .
If you want an even dumber question-
Where are my keys?
There's no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb answers. Did you look under the sofa cushions? http://elcaminocentral.com/users/87ss/razz.gif

Eric I always keep my keys in the same place, that way I never loose them. My old lady has to search for her keys atleast 3 times a week or more.
motorbreth 05-14-2004, 01:03 PM just get a new door key cut. its like $3.00 here. theyll just put your VIN on the net and i gives 'em the key code. putting in new cylinders is an option(more exspensive), or you could just take out the cylinder and take off the little aluminum cover and shake out all the springs and tumblers and you wont even need a key!!
camino81 05-14-2004, 01:19 PM How about "There are no stupid questions, just stupid people." :P
PunkRican 05-14-2004, 07:19 PM my 70 has 2 keys...but as far as i remember my old 76 only had one. but keys are cheap anyways get anew one if its 2 keys. o and i like the one they use in school "the only stupid question is teh oen that isnt asked"...thats is so not true
motorbreth 05-17-2004, 01:36 PM speaking of stupid questions i just had one asked to me... how much weight can i put in the bed of my half ton truck??
60ElCam 05-17-2004, 01:45 PM It depends upon heavy duty suspension or not. If you go to the manufacturer's website, you can look it up easily. I don't know if 6.5' or 8' bed makes a difference, but it will all be spelled out there.

o, i guess i forgot to say this happened while i was at work, i work in a GM parts department. :D
Mrapii 05-20-2004, 06:16 PM That depends...is it really 1/2 ton or only 1000lbs?
PunkRican 05-20-2004, 08:27 PM That depends...is it really 1/2 ton or only 1000lbs?
i thought a 1/2 ton was 1000 pounds... since u kno a ton is 2000 and all....
Mrapii 05-20-2004, 08:46 PM It really depends...if you're North of the equator that's true, but South of the Equator the're different.
motorbreth 05-21-2004, 10:15 AM whoa 8O sorry i shared!! dont want to cause a civil war in the forum!!! but really it was just one example of the thousands of stupid things people ask me all day... and something else ive learned is that no two people ever call the same part by the same name, and nor do they know what the part does, where exactly they got it from thier car, or what size engine thier automobile has. :x you just want to hit every one of them with a 2X4...
theelcaminofactory 05-21-2004, 10:59 AM Concerning the key issue, I lost the keys to my 84 Elky. I went to a GM dealer with the VIN. GM did not start keeping track of keys based on the VIN until I think he said 91 or 92. I had to replace all the cylinders.
Mrapii 05-21-2004, 11:51 AM Hey Motorbreth that's why you got a job. If everyone was as knowledgeable as you about car parts you wouldn't be needed.
motorbreth 05-21-2004, 01:24 PM :? not sure if that would be a bad thing.... :D i could take the elky for a road trip across america!
Mrapii 05-21-2004, 01:27 PM Hey Motorbreth...don't you ever go to work? I'm retired so I can be on the computer all day.
motorbreth 05-21-2004, 02:44 PM Hey Motorbreth...don't you ever go to work? I'm retired so I can be on the computer all day.

PunkRican 05-22-2004, 04:29 PM maybe you 2 should just chill out and quit your bickering, i mean come on, what are you in like 3rd grade again?
maybe you 2 should just chill out and quit your bickering, i mean come on, what are you in like 3rd grade again? This is tame compared to some other boards I'm a member at..
motorbreth 05-24-2004, 12:29 PM i didnt know i was bickering, i shared a bit of info from my work day, and this old retired guy starts goin off on me. i dont know what it is that i said that set him off, but he is really starting to piss me off. what ever your problem is mrappi, or whatever your name is, get over it. you say your retired, then you are waaaay to old to be acting like a 2 year old. so chill out, drink some prune juice and go on with your day. :D
camino81 05-24-2004, 01:10 PM i like to check in through out the day to see whats going on.
