: Stupid question

I bought a 78 El Camino a few months ago. It has some minor issues, so I haven't been able to drive it much. Also sence money is tight right now, it's sitting. Anyways, my stupid question. Is the key for starting the car the same one as the door locks ??? I only have the one key for it and I'm too lazy to go out too it right now (Cold rainy, ...not a nice day.).

All the old GM stuff has a round key for the doors/trunk and a square/rectangular key for the ignition. If you only have an ignition key you can buy replacement lock cylinders that should also come with a new key.

Most of the time on my 83 the ignition key will work just as well as the door key for unlocking it. Shouldn't happen...but it's just that worn. Oh well, less fumbling for me (No stock keys...2 square replacements. So confusing)

The Eky definitely uses two keys.
If you want an even dumber question-
Where are my keys?"

Before you replace your locks, you can take them out of the doors and bring them to a local locksmith. They can re-key them for a fraction of the cost to replace them with new . . .

There's no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb answers. Did you look under the sofa cushions? http://elcaminocentral.com/users/87ss/razz.gif

Eric I always keep my keys in the same place, that way I never loose them. My old lady has to search for her keys atleast 3 times a week or more.

just get a new door key cut. its like $3.00 here. theyll just put your VIN on the net and i gives 'em the key code. putting in new cylinders is an option(more exspensive), or you could just take out the cylinder and take off the little aluminum cover and shake out all the springs and tumblers and you wont even need a key!!

It depends upon heavy duty suspension or not. If you go to the manufacturer's website, you can look it up easily. I don't know if 6.5' or 8' bed makes a difference, but it will all be spelled out there.

whoa 8O sorry i shared!! dont want to cause a civil war in the forum!!! but really it was just one example of the thousands of stupid things people ask me all day... and something else ive learned is that no two people ever call the same part by the same name, and nor do they know what the part does, where exactly they got it from thier car, or what size engine thier automobile has. :x you just want to hit every one of them with a 2X4...

Concerning the key issue, I lost the keys to my 84 Elky. I went to a GM dealer with the VIN. GM did not start keeping track of keys based on the VIN until I think he said 91 or 92. I had to replace all the cylinders.

Hey Motorbreth that's why you got a job. If everyone was as knowledgeable as you about car parts you wouldn't be needed.

:? not sure if that would be a bad thing.... :D i could take the elky for a road trip across america!
