Hi y'all. This is my first post as I just found this forum.
I'm running an 82SS, frame off built(not me), 350 with edelbrock carb/intake, 400 trans and 15" Z28 wheels with /60s.
Pardon my redundance but lowering seems quite the popular topic here.
My Elco sits pretty level now but I am wanting to lower the front about 1". I have considered the S-10 springs for about $50 but it seems like just cutting the springs by one coil is the cheapest way to go.
Having never done this before, I'm looking for some general advice.
Any tips on removal or install of the springs?
Can I just cut the coil square with a wheel or do I need a torch?
Any other tricks to it I should know?
Any information/opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, -- Rob in Reno.

don't use a torch for it will take the torsion out of the spring. use either a cutoff wheel or a hack saw. if you want to drop it an inch, start at the top of the coil and and measure working your way down. every half inch you cut is supposed to equal an inch of drop. also when you cut the spring you increase the spring rate. i read something a while back about cutting springs and it said cut a little at a time until you get your desired height.

Rob, whatever you do, use a spring compressor when you start taking out and putting the springs back in. You'll save a HUGE amount of time but most of all you'll save your life. Dude, those things will put a major ass whoopin' on you when you start trying to pry them in and out of their respective places. There's lots of horror stories about people getting hit in the face, chest, etc. Be careful and have fun.

Go to O'Reilly, Advanced Auto, NAPA, whatever store you have in your area and rent an internal spring compressor. It goes through the middle of the spring and pulls the coils down so you can remove the spring. When you disconnect the lower ball joint from the spindle the lower control arm will get pushed down as far as it will go from the spring force. Don't pry the spring out or it will F'ing fly out with some hella force!! Use a chain around the spring so if something should happen, the spring will not fly about willy nilly. Let me know if you need anymore info.

I've changed front coil springs without a spring compressor. BE VERY CAREFUL, ALWAYS USE A SAFETY CHAIN. If you disconnect the lower balljoint and use a floor jack under the lower A arms you can remove the coil springs without compressing them or prying them out of the spring pockets.
