I am wanting to to change the standard steering columin my '78 Elky to a tilt whheel colum from a '86 Elky, but the shaft connection looks different.
Am I seeing things or are they actually different? If the connection joint is different, is there a way to modify so I can use the '86 tilt colum in my'78?
Thanx Guys

The 86 has the wiper switch on the signal light switch and your 78 has the wiper switch on the dash. so the wiring is not going to be the same, other than that it should fit.

If you are talking about the end of the shaft where it connects to the steering box, yes they are different. One is slightly larger than the other.
I "BELIEVE" that you would need the rag joint (coupler) and bolts from the 86. Then you would also need to open up the bolt holes in the coupler to fit the gear. The mechanical swap is do-able.
As 83 mentioned, you may have more trouble with the electrical portion.

Rick.
Thank you for your response. but it's not the connection at the rag joint. its the one closer up to the firewall were the shafts are connected together.
The 86 shaft at this point has a rectangular shape with approx. a 7/16" hole
drilled through. I haven't disassembled the 78 shaft yet. because I drive the elky every day, but from what I can tell by looking. the shaft on it looks to be round with a knotch for the clamp and bolt to fit in were it joins together. I hope I have explained this clearly, but I hate to take it apart until i'm sure it will work.
Thanx, Randy
