Hello all,
I'm finally going to be yanking out my 305 and replacing it with a 350! I was/am going to go with a standard 350 crate engine (10067353) and just put a cam in it, I am looking at using the 268-h cam. Does this sound like a good combo and a good way to go for a daily driver? I was going to go with the 350 H.O. engine but gas prices bieng what they are in my area and this bieng my daily driver it just does not mix at the moment. Any thoughts would be a big help. I could also go the local engine guy route and have an engine built plus side would be more power downside warranty would be a lot less and would consume more fuel. Which way to go? Thanks for any help/info.

Do you mean that when you try to order it from a dealer or from GmPartsdirect they say the number does not exist, or did you mean people on this forum?

Check out This site. (http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/crate-engines.html?engine_gid=379&name=&sid=1AlF2z0-JHXA5mE-14104572654.df). Thier 7 year / 70,000 mile warranty is hard to beat, and they are usely cheaper then most everybody else. You can call them 1-800-942-7800 and they will install the cam of your choice. They carry Comp Cams.

HEY AUGUST, I HAVE A 350 H.O. MY SELF AND I THINK ITS A GREAT ENGINE IT COMES WITH A CAM FROM A 1967-69 CORVET BUT A LITTLE MORE UP TODATE. I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT THE GAS PRICES PAYING $2.30 A GALLON IS NO JOKE, I FILL IT UP WITH $30 AND IT WILL LAST ME ABOUT 3-4 DAYS BUT I TELL YOU, ITS WORTH IT. THE CRATE ENGINE IS WORTH THE GAS 8)

2.30 a gallon, I wish! I'm in the San Diego area and regular is $2.37 a gallon while mid grade is $2.47 and preium is $2.67! This is getting scarry. On another note, I ran into a buisness friend and to make a long story short I have the chane of possibly getting an LT1 engine as trade for some work he would like me to do for him. The question is is this a good way to go or shold I stick to what I was planning on doing in the first place?

I have the chane of possibly getting an LT1 engine as trade for some work he would like me to do for him. DROOL!

On another note you may find the 268 on the verge of not being very streetable for a daily driver. Just a thought.

What cam would you reccomend? I need this to be sterreable and be able to pass smog without to many complications, like I really don't want to go to a smog referee, they can be a real pain sometimes(most of the times).

I've ran thier 292-H in street engines, and the 292-H is way more radical then the 268-H. With the 268-H you can still use a stock torque converter.

I suppose I should take a minute to complain loudly about the $1.96/gal I paid the other day for premium...

Well, so far as cam goes, I'm assuming the engine you're talking about is a Goodwrench 350 or similar setup.

The Goodwrench engine makes about 8.5:1 compression, which is fine for normal street use, but you may want to use a set of heads with tighter chambers than the 76cc heads that come on the motor if you want to run that cam (I'm assuming you're referring to either the Comp Magnum or Xtreme Energy grind, in which case tougher valvesprings would be a good idea too).

This will compensate for the drop in cylinder pressure caused by the air being able to move faster due to the cam change.

Bear in mind that with flattops 64cc heads give you about 10.25:1 compression and you'll need to run premium gas.

Let me give you some detail about what I'm running.

I have a pair of 882 heads over flattops on my car, which are also 76cc heads.

The cam I run is a Blue Racer grind with gross lift of .420/.443, duration @ .050" of 204/214 with lobe separation of 112 (I think).

Granted, this doesn't sound like much, and it doesn't really lope, but it is almost a direct copy of the Edelbrock Performer cam, and it pulls like hell to 5000 RPM.

Run this with a Performer manifold and a decent Quadrajet with a pair of duals, preferably with some ram horns or headers and a balance tube, and you'll have a great street motor; nice and well-behaved at idle, sharp throttle response, and very torquey, with a lot more midrange power than you'd expect. This setup likes a lot of timing (I run 16 degrees base advance, which I compensate for with premium fuel), so if it's ever go-time, keep that in mind.
