: 350 H.O. ?
lkojojo 05-17-2004, 07:16 PM HEY GUYS, SEE IF YOU GUYS COULD HELP? I HAVE A 350 H.O. CRATE ENGINE WITH A HOLLEY 650 DOUBLE PUMPER, HEADMAN HEADERS, EDELBROCK PERFORMER RPM INTAKE, MSD 6A HEI SYSTEM, 2 1/4 FLOWMASTERS DUAL EXAUST. I WOULD SAY THAT IM AROUND 350-370HP, I WANT TO GET 400+ HP FOR A CHEAP COST MAYBE AROUND $600-$1000 AT THE MOST, ANY SUGGESTIONS? :?
86camino 05-17-2004, 08:34 PM only thing i can think of right now for that price is NOS or maybe a bigger cam with roller lifters and full roller rockers.
NOS will get you the HP you want, and with the $$$ you have to spend NOS will get you there safely with $$$ leftover to refill the bottle a few times. :P
crash landing 05-18-2004, 01:42 AM what kind of heads are you running with
theelcaminofactory 05-18-2004, 02:50 AM Which Crate motor did you use?
lkojojo 05-18-2004, 01:40 PM IM USEING THE VORTEC HEADS THAT CAME WITH THE ENGINE, THE ENGINE IS A 350 H.O. MADE BY GM PERFORMANCE [code]12496968. WOULD THE HEADS HANDLE A SHOT OF THAT JUICE AND HOW MUCH OF IT CAN IT HANDLE?
bigsleeperdog 05-19-2004, 08:18 PM Don't know if those are cast pistons or not....if cast be consevative on the NOS. I would pull the heads and get bigger valves and porting, the guides cut down to handle more lift and then more cam.

ElkyPete 05-20-2004, 07:04 AM Change the springs on the heads and go with a better cam. Get a cam something like the Comp Cams SR280. The SR280 is actually a solid roller cam so look for something in a Hydraulic roller cam with about the same profile, if that crate engine has roller lifters otherwise, get the Comp XE 284 cam. And I'd change from a 1.5:1 rocker to a 1.6:1 roller rocker with that cam. I would think that you'd jump to around 450 horses maybe a little more at the flywheel. Remember your drive train will now be taking more of a beating, In less than a year, if you do this, you are going to have to do some work on the transmission, my guess.
Always keep in mind the weakest link will go bad, its only a matter of time. But good luck and one more thing. With the XE284 you're going to need something like a 2500 or 3000 RPM stall converter to make it all work right.
The Comp Cams XE 268 and some 1.6:1 rockers will give you something close to 400 horses, 380 or so. You will probably need to re-jet the carburetor or get a 750 CFM and still may have to change the jets. I'd also, in case you don't already get a better ignition. I'd always suggest the MSD ignition but if you have a favorite then use that but don't use the stock GM HEI.
Just a suggestion. :D
lkojojo 05-20-2004, 04:21 PM HEY PETE HOW MUCH WILL ALL THAT RUN ME FOR, REMEMBER I'M IN A $600-$1000 RANGE? FOR THE IGNITION I HAVE A MSD HEI KIT ALREADY INSTALLED, WILL THAT WORK?AS FOR THE STALL I HAVE B&M 2500 ALONG WITH MY REBUILT TH350, SO IT SHOULD GOOD FOR NOW DONT YOU THINK?AS FOR THE NOS DO YOU THINK THAT MY ENGINE CAN STAND A SHOT OF IT ONCE IN A WHILE?IT HAS CAST ALUMINUM PISTONS?
Mrapii 05-21-2004, 02:26 AM You're best bet is a nitrous system. You're engine can handle a 125-140 shot. Don't skimp on the nitrous safety controls and creep up on the nitrous. I got a 125hp shot with a Jacob Mastermind on a 350 with cast pistons and a TH350 with 2000 stall converter. The nitrous turns a mild mannered engine into a road beast; lots of fun and surprises the hell out of the Rice Rocketeers. The money spent on the nitrous fills will be taken care of by the extra gas mileage you get when you don't use a bigger cam, carb and heads to get that 125hp. If I don't use the nitrous I can even use regular fuel.
lkojojo 05-21-2004, 02:27 PM THANX FOR ALL THE INFO GUYS, I GUESS I'LL JUST GO WITH SOME NOS. 8)
ElkyPete 05-25-2004, 11:57 AM If you change the springs, cam and rockers then you're probably looking at around 500 - 700.
NOS you are looking at about the same $$. NOS is recomended for stock or close to stock engines. If you have a Hi-performance engine then NOS is a little help but not as much as it is with a stock engine. I woulnd't go over a 150 shot.
No matter which way you go Good Luck.
Xtreme Camino 07-03-2004, 02:15 PM hi ikojojo
take a look on my technical page from my Elky. i own the same engine with some upgrades
330hp crate upgrade (http://www.chevy-elcamino.com/technical.html)
68 327ELKY 08-21-2004, 11:51 AM well theres a problem yea nos is great and all for a couple runs but your spend more money rebuiling the block cuaase a piston put a hole through it if i were you i would just change the cam and roller rockers and also maybe a 3inch header i like hookers the best
Mrapii 08-21-2004, 07:09 PM You can safely use NOS unless you're a "brokanic". Don't let someone talk you out of NOS because they or one of their hamfisted friends was careless. Some people can't tighten a bolt without snapping the head off.
68 327ELKY 08-21-2004, 07:17 PM yea nos can be used but u have retards out there that put it on little rice burners and say they have a race carwhen all they have is a craptastic aluminum block that cant stand the heat and wondder why there blocks melt. plus nos is only good for the stripp i would rather have a car that has good power all the time but gas is pricey
Supercharged 86 08-21-2004, 07:31 PM yea nos can be used but u have retards out there that put it on little rice burners and say they have a race carwhen all they have is a craptastic aluminum block that cant stand the heat and wondder why there blocks melt. plus nos is only good for the stripp i would rather have a car that has good power all the time but gas is pricey
" good power all the time "... Sounds like a like a job for Supercharger!
68 327ELKY 08-21-2004, 07:34 PM yea or just a 572 but i have a 383 stroker in mine i wanna put a supercharger on it though
