darbysan 06-29-2011, 08:20 AM Sudden breakdown like this leads me to check the Electronic Module in the distributor. Most Auto parts stores can check them for free. Make them check it at least 3 times, as it is the heat that causes the failure. If it is bad, be sure to use heat sink compound when you re-install it, or it will fail again.
tdawglp 06-29-2011, 08:23 AM are you talkin bout on top of the distributor its HEI?
darbysan 06-29-2011, 08:41 AM are you talkin bout on top of the distributor its HEI?
Inside the distributor, under the rotor, is the Electronics Module. Screwed to the dist with 2 screws, IIRC. Problem could also be in the Coil that is in the top of the distributor. I think the Store can check that as well. Be sure that the ground strap on the coil is attached ( under the coil cover). No ground on the coil will fry the electronics module.
1983SS454 06-29-2011, 09:59 AM HEI modules, gotta love them... They can go bad as quick as the snap of a finger with no good reason why
goodcruiser 06-29-2011, 10:32 AM Take a look at the carbon lead that connects the coil to the rotor inside the distributor cap,it may have worn off.
tdawglp 06-29-2011, 11:50 AM thanx guys ill let ya know what they tell me
tdawglp 06-29-2011, 11:52 AM OH AND I NOTICE ALOT OF BLACK DUST NEAR THE CENTER OF THE CAP WHERE THE HOLES AT FOR THAT ONE PEICE
:dontknow:

tdawglp 07-01-2011, 10:38 AM and i have a 8364 ignition module and i cant find anyone who has it
goodcruiser 07-01-2011, 12:05 PM Does this help?
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/search/Ignition+Module!s!Control+Unit!s!Ignitor/02801/C0334.oap?make=Chevrolet&model=El+Camino&year=1984&vi=1042692
These are for the 305ci engine if you have a V6 you will need to to revise the search.
tdawglp 07-01-2011, 06:10 PM mine is like a half moon shape computer chip with three wires that go out of the distributor
tdawglp 07-01-2011, 06:14 PM http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-83645/?rtype=10

darbysan 07-02-2011, 07:12 AM 8364 is an old MSD part number. It has been superseded by 83645.

EZFrank 07-04-2011, 04:54 AM check your cap i know mine the center of the cap has this nipple mine was wore out new cap and fire right up.
steelybill 07-04-2011, 07:53 AM Also, the pick-up coil, that has two wires running to the module. It can be checked with an ohm meter for continuity.
tdawglp 07-04-2011, 08:56 AM well is there anyway to test the module i would like to make sure its is bad before replacement
tdawglp 07-04-2011, 10:13 AM steelybill is there a number amount that should be seen when checking the pickup coil
JJLT1 07-04-2011, 01:31 PM looks like 83645 is superseded by 83647 now..:texas:

cant find any testing procedures for the module @msd,,its probly a little different than a stock one..
msd says send it in,,they will check it..
for the pickup,,as long as you dont get a open reading,,and its not shorted out,,its probly ok..
steelybill 07-05-2011, 12:48 PM A friend had some problems with MSD stuff, and called them. He said they were great to deal with.
