Hello guys I got a question. I bought some SS mirrors and a SS spoiler and Cowl. I was wondering if the mirrors used the same mounting holes just different appearance or do they mount in a totally different place further up thanks. O yeah my elky is a 82

They mount further forward. The point at the front of mirror just about lines up with the point where the window meets the door. I was given measurements by Dan when I put mine on. I can post up his measurements if you want.

I'll have to look for the info.

I didn't get the gaskets from Dan just the measurements. I got them from Laureneng.com They are normally part of a mirror kit they sell. But they will sell them separate.

I may be wrong here, someone please correct me if I am. But I believe the gaskets may be different between the Monte and the Elky SS mirrors. I got a Monte SS pass. side remote mirror from ebay and had earlier picked up a new set of Monte/Elky SS gaskets to replace the originals...they didn't fit the door contour correctly, so I ended up using the original for the time being...

You're right the gaskets are different. The mirrors are the same. The gaskets that Laureneng sells are for an El Camino's door.

Folks,

I do have a issue I need your clarification on with this mirror mod.
I had an 83 and now an 84, both have the old style mirrors. On my 83, I had to drill new holes for the new SS Sport mirror up on the body line and centered 7" forward from the original mirror location.

Yes, they required the EL Camino SS Gaskets to mount correctly.

Problem I ran into is that in the proper location, the mounting ends up being not only at the door skins inner weld seam, but the holes have to pass through the inner skin framing which is double walled!! When I did finally get everything right for mounting the mirrors, The outer skin ended up being loose at the front due to drilling through the weld point to make the front mounting hole. The worst was the dirvers door, when making the hole for the mirror control to pass through. I elected to use a none cabled style for the passenger side.

I gather from all this that the pre 86 doors are made very differently than the later ones, yes?

I had to painfully shear away some of the inner support just to be able to get to the mirror studs to get the nuts on, and it was still tricky as heck to do.

As a result, how are you successfully getting past the inner skin obsticals without re-welding or removing metal, or is that task just understood outside of closing the old mounting holes ?

I have a set I am wanting to put on my 84, but I won't be doing so if I have to do what I did on on my 83 to get them mounted, or if I will have to buy 86-87 doors.

Please Advise, as this mod "appears" to be a low duty task to the unsuspecting, but in realityat least for me, required a great deal more to do, and I may have gone about it incorrectly, as well as others.

I appreciiate your help!! :?

Sorry Man!

Better to know the real deal before hand..

You don't need the hassle of the surprise AFTER you drilled that first new mounting hole. I felt real woozy after I realized what I had to do.

Again, just my personal experience, and I want to know / believe there is a better way, because they look so dang sweet !

Tell me bout it man I love the look. This is my first elky and I love it, I am getting everything I need to get it ready for paint and I would hate to mess up my doors also. I hope that there are people that have done this without probs. It almost makes me want to use the orig. sport mirror holes but when they are mounted like the 87 the elky look sweet and streamlined.

Links for 3 pictures of the 86-87 Sport mirror body placement.
This is not a modification for the faint of heart. It's quite different from the 78-85 Sport mirror mounting holes. But, IMHO, the results are quite worth the work involved.
There is a 1-1/4" wide flat ridge on each door. If you measure from the front door edge, with the measuring tape running along the bottom line of the ridge I've mentioned above, then the front edge of the mirror base is 6-3/4" from the door edge. This can be seen in my picture "Mirror_1.jpg". http://www.rivercitycorvetteclub.com/images/Mirror_1.jpg
To help ensure the mirror is mounted straight, the base of the Sport mirror has a slight curve that fits on the bottom edge of the same 1-1/4" ridge I've mentioned above.
Pictures Mirror_2 and Mirror_3 show this curved mirror base edge mounted on my '87 Elky.

E-mail me if this is too confusing.

Thanks for the pics, they at least show me personally that I had placed mine on my 83 correctly.
OK, Dan here it comes. You agreed that this is not for the faint of heart. Can you provide any detail as to the under work that has to be done inside the door to get these babes installed?

Was it the same toils for you as it was for me? Lente and I are chompin at the bit for some detail here.

Anyone, Please relay what had/has to be done on the inside of the door , as the pics Dan has kindly posted show, what sweet results we both want as well.

THANKS A MILL.

My comments were based on the experience of 1986SS (Bill Waxler), who has done this mod on a 1985 Elky. My '87 already had the factory SS mirrors.
Also, I believe Poltergeist (Rob) has fairly recently completed this mod. Perhaps he can tell us what to expect from the "inside" of each door?
My comments were mostly to let you know it's not a straight "bolt-on" job.

For anyone doing the 87 SS mirror conversion to their elky the gaskets are different off a monte carlo or camaro as most you you know. I bought the right ones from Lauren Engineering for $15.00 plus 5.00 shipping.
