Keyser:
you realize that by fabricating this compresser on your own, you could possibly cause the collapse of the chinese import business .......LOL
Necessity is the mother of invention glad to see we are building tools in our own garages !!

I don't see how! This one will never break (unlike a chinese one), so I will only have to make one, unless I loan it out and never see it again, in which case I'd have to fabricate a gun. lol

And I built that on my 2nd floor porch/deck, outside my apt. door. I still need to fabricate a garage someday!

i have blue prints (more like a written layout) for a spring compressor that completly covers the spring to prevent it from some how breaking the compressor and killing you
it uses nylon style banding to hold the sring together so you can install it then cut the banding after the suspenion is put back together hope to one day build it i have all the steel to assemble it

How are you going to get it out? :dontknow:

The plates slide between the coils, and slide back out when you're done. The ends of the plates help hold them in place.

or as Curley says......

We may have to blast! :nanawrench:

I guess it works, if you say so. http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/images/smilies/yup.gif Obviously, you can't put the top piece of your tool on the top of the spring because there's no place to slide it out, so you can only compress a few coils, and is that enough to get the spring in? I don't use a spring compressor myself. With the A-arm fasteners at the frame, and with the balljoint fastened, just jack the A-arm into place, thus compressing the spring. All should be aware that spring compressors are pretty dangerous before thinking about using one.

How did you get the spring out?

How did you get the spring out?

Basically, separate the lower balljoint with a jack under the A-arm. Lower the A-arm until it is fully extended and pry out the spring.

Why do you ask? :dontknow:

Don't take this wrong way but those plates don't look thick enough. It also looks like iron? That's not a good choice. Iron breaks and/or shatters. There is a tremendous amount of pressure in a compressed spring.
The lowered "A" arm way is the way most pros do these front ends. Usually on a lift with a stand under the lower arm.

Those are cut off of a big chunk of structural steel "C" channel, like they use for the frame of large metal buildings. Got it at the recycling center.

Yeah but it's still only 7/32 thick. And the steel used in buildings becomes part of a cage where the load is shed throughout the entire framework.

All well and good. But you don't need a spring compressor. ;)
