Ok the gages are working now except the tach an oil pressure (I cut that line because I think it was shorted, will solve that later)
I'm getting power to the tach. There are 3 prongs that feed the tach just where it plugs into the pod. Does anyone know a way to test those 3 prongs to see if I'm getting the correct ground and power feed at that point?
There is power there and at the firewall of course and the dist. but the gage just jumps during ignition then falls as engine fires???
thanks

I just finished installing a factory tach in my '86 yesterday. Sounds to me with all the bouncing of the needle going on when powered on, that it's probably getting power ok but there may not be a complete connection from the distributor to the tach. Try running a separate lead from the tach terminal on the distributor to the terminal labeled "C" on the tach. If that doesn't do it try running seperate power leads. I hooked up the 3 connections directly under the hood before I tore down the dash just to make sure the tach worked alright. Testing the unit doesn't hurt before going through all that work.

Talking about factory tachs my 87 tach does not work and I have not opened up the dash .
But there is one white wire not connected to anything sticking thru the firewall on the drivers side !
Is that the little guy that will make mine work ?
Thanx ,

My '86 did not come equiped with a tach so there was no lead going to the distributor and I had to run one. Is there a wire plugged into the tach terminal on the distributor? As for what your white wire is, you didn't mention if it's sticking through under the dash or into the engine compartment. Either way your best bet is to try and trace it back to find where it originates. Best bet, if you don't know if the tach is connected properly, pull it out and check that the 12v, ground and coil connections on the back are all complete.

Well I pulled it into the garage today and checked the tach situation out . The white wire that is coming thru the firewall from under the dash is always hot . My guess is the power source for the under hood light that is not there . I may be wrong .
The tach was not pulled out to check but no wires are disconnected between the firewall and the distributor .
What I did notice is when the engine cranks over before it starts the tach will go to 400 rpm but when the engine does start the tach goes back to zero and stays there without any other action of any kind .
Thanx for your help . I have never been too sharp with electrical .
