: Fuel Milage
scottfromcanada 05-20-2004, 06:36 PM Hey all, I was just wondering for anyone out there with MSD ignitions, how it affected your fuel milage. The biggest reason I am debating over getting one is the increased fuel milage that it claims, I'm just wondering is it really worth it?
oh btw, gas in BC is 99.9 a litre.
sucks eh?
Mrapii 05-21-2004, 02:56 AM If you already have an HEI and it is functioning ok there probably won't be much difference. If you have ignition points it could make a substancial difference.
dennis68 05-21-2004, 08:43 PM I love my MSD-pro-billet dist and 6A box with blaster coil. It didn't do much for mileage but much improved low speed operation and starting compared to the HEI it had before.(Yes I am a prof. mech-it was working right before the change)
eighty_five_el_camino 05-21-2004, 09:16 PM 99.9 a liter?
that would be 10.00 a liter?
Holy Sh**!
Mrapii 05-22-2004, 01:10 AM No $1.00 per liter or nearly $4.00 per gallon.
ElkyPete 05-25-2004, 11:57 AM I like the difference the MSD ignition made in my Elky but I am afrade that Gas MIliage is not a big concern of mine so I don't keep track. When it gets close to empty, I fill it up. I can say that in the mornings / first start of the day I put the pedal to the metal once then crank it up. It doesn't turn over more than about twice before it starts now. It idles without loading up and is not fouling the plugs or burning up the Caps or rotors and all the plugs fire now.
So I would advocate the MSD or any aftermarket ignition like the MSD setup. Its good ignition. You do however, have to use Spirial core wires. You will also be able to increase the Plug gap to around 55. The plugs will last longer too. So there are several advantages ti having an Ignition like the MSD set-up.
If you have a Tach then chances are you will need the filter for the MSD ignition. Otherwise you could end up with a dead tach.
That is my $0.02 worth.
Tommy 05-25-2004, 07:03 PM I increased 2 to 3 mpg with a 6a.
Mrapii 05-25-2004, 07:16 PM While having increased fuel mileage is very nice, the better starting, smoother idling and increased sparkplug life are also very welcome if you are converting over from points.
scottfromcanada 05-25-2004, 07:45 PM Thanks for all the opinions guys, Not too make this too off topic, but I'm trying to figure out any little things to increase fuel milage.
Right now I have headers, an edlebrock rpm intake k&n filter, msd 9mm wires and AC Delco Rapid Fire Plugs with a rochester carb.
So If anyone else has any other ideas i'd be much appreciative to hear em.

Add a 700R4 or a 200R4 overdrive or a 5 /6 speed manual overdrive if you are so inclined. Keep good tire pressure, proper level of oil in the rear end. Have a suck-up truck piggy back you around everywhere. :D Send the Q-Jet to Jet industries to be rebuilt and calibrated to your engine again.
eighty_five_el_camino 06-09-2004, 03:58 PM tonneu cover
I like the soft ones but the hard covers actually make it able to keep stuff back there
72Roader 02-17-2005, 01:40 AM When I biult my 454, what a Gzhog, my son was 4 yrs old and I needed the extra bread for bread, so I figured that if they put restricter plates on nascars then if I reduced the cfm of my carb I could get better mileage right? Well I moved down the hills from a 850 holley to 450 cfm holley Economizer model, it ran great! Still had 30 ft burnouts, chirpted in second, it ran out of gas at 95 mph, all my buddies said it would'nt run I took off the aircleaner and showed them it did, they just shook their heads, and smiled. Of course I did some trick work to the distributer, wires, and ran Splitfire plugs Diff was a posi.

Overdrive transmissions have already been mentioned...
Try EFI.
Try tuning your setup to be optimized at highway speeds. That Edelbrock rpm intake for example is counter to best gas mileage. You want low end torque for best gas mileage since there is where you run on the highway.
