: should I buy a '76?
backerman 05-25-2004, 12:51 PM Hi, new to this site. I'm looking at a friend of mines Elky that he is selling for $850.
Should I buy it?
I've got a '67 Camaro restoration going on in the background eating my cash but I've always wanted an Elky and it'd be useful for the bed.
Is this a good price?
It's in pretty good shape, one or two dents but they are small and no paint scraped.
I'm looking at a friend of mines Elky that he is selling for $850. Sounds like a deal to me! How's the drive train? And on another note. Welcome to the site!
backerman 05-25-2004, 01:14 PM Thanks...
Rebuilt 350 with a TH350 I think... Same guy who is doing my Cam. did the work on it. Don't know how many miles are on it but he just had a new exhaust system installed too.
I'm not sure I like the front end though.. I kinda like the older style round lights grill etc. Could I change that if it really bothers me that much?
Its metallic blue, but I would paint it black.
I'm not sure I like the front end though.. I kinda like the older style round lights grill etc. if you mean like this (http://www.elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?set_albumName=Overhaulin-104&id=DSC00221&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php) then yes, you could change it.
backerman 05-25-2004, 02:08 PM Looks a bit too.. rocket like in the front... havn't seen that one yet though. I like the rest of it a lot.
Maybe I'll just trade it eventually for a '67 and keep my whole '67 theme going.
Thanks!
Caveman49 05-25-2004, 04:38 PM Welcome to the site! Where is this Elky located?
If it runs, is not totally rusted oput & you need a parts chaser, WHY NOT! Go get it.
backerman 05-26-2004, 10:42 AM Southern California, no rust at all!
I just gotta wait a month and a half to save that much money.

Amen to this post! If it's safe to drive, then I'd go for it. I've found though if you want to restore an Elky, be prepared to pay a little extra to restore the 4th gen (73? - 77) as they are less popular for some reason. Also, parts are a little harder to find for some things (i.e. body mount bushings).
backerman 05-26-2004, 04:12 PM It's not much in need of restoration.. and I wouldn't really do that. I might redo the interior just cause I like doing that but all in all its pretty clean and solid.
I'm not sure why this style is the least popular, but I find it my least favorite as well. Its not that its ugly or bad, just that I like the others so much more!
This is a great deal I think and it will allow me to get a '67 Elky someday.
I saw a beautiful black one for sale for $5k today, just wish I could fast forward to a point where I have that kind of cash.
Anyhow I'm sure I'll be posting back up here with pics once I get it, and asking lots of questions.
Thanks for the welcome!

My 77 has been totaly redone. From suspension, to drive train, to body, etc. I've invested $15K. Any running Elky for $850 is a buy.
Go for it and enjoy a truly unique ride.

backerman 05-28-2004, 03:30 PM Alright I found out something thats wrong with it, it has an oil leak.
However I asked if it was from the pan, or the valve covers he said no.
So where could it be leaking from? Not the heads or it wouldn't be running and I think from the filter would be pretty obvious.
So are there any other places oil can leak from?

Bad PCV
Pull the oil filler cap while running and at normal temp see how much blowby is coming out of the filler hole. It shouldn't be much at all if any. Pull the plugs and look at them to see if they are fouling.
backerman 06-07-2004, 10:56 AM I'll check that, I pick it up at the end of the week. One other problem with it is the shift linkage; its a column shift and you have to ram it into park sometimes. How difficult is this to repair? I'm expecting to spend about $500 on it initially for odds and ends or whatever it may need. Any advice on what I should spend it on?
