I know this isn't an Elky but... I have just started another project. A barn stored '68 mustang coupe that has been a home to many mice for the last 15-18 years. It appears they left the wires alone, but they have left their mark on everything else. I'm planning to replace the whole interior (headliner, seat covers, carpet) and rebuild and clean all the A/C and Heater items. The floor needs to be sandblasted anyway and probably painted with POR15. Any other suggestions to get rid of the smells and damage from all the mice urine? This is one nasty smelling car!!

Thanks!

Hey 64,

It's a good thing you are changing out everything in the interior - good start. Make sure every bit of insulation is scraped out of the car. Since you are working on the A/C, you will also want to pull out the entire dash and all the insulation and ductwork from behind it. If you can get replacements for ducts, you should do it. Plastic parts can be cleaned, but anything with foam or cardboard will retain the smell (older cars use many organic and foam products for ducts and insulation which will hold the smell forever). If you get it down to the empty skeleton, consider steam-cleaning the interior space - I have seen it done. After you do all this and POR-15 the floor and paint the interior, this should eliminate anything else.

Good luck with the Pony.

Incidentally - have you seen the Mythbusters episode where they wondered if they could get the smell of a corpse out of a car to sell? They bought a pristine Corvette, put two dead pigs in the seats for three months inside an overseas container in the heat - and then attempted to clean it to sell . . . it wasn't pretty. They had to sell it for "parts only" in the end.

Thanks! Removing the insulation wasn't a problem, they already ate it ALL!! Basically everything in the dash is out now and it will get gone through completely. It has the leaky cowl problem so I had to go that far to see all the damage anyway.

Last night I gave it a bath in bleach water, then soapy water. That seemed to help a lot. At this point I think sandblasting the floor, trunk and a few other areas, plus paint should do it.

The A/C and Heater stuff is a mess.

I'm looking forward to this one. I've done 3 vehicles for my boys the past 4 years. This one is for me.
