Well, I certainly hope you don't live in a town like Bridgeport IL. This radio program describes the plight of a 41 year old man, Michael Allison, who had his unregistered autos he was restoring, stolen from his private property by the powers that be in his community. The result of this intrusion by the government threatens to incarcerate this gentleman for up to 75 years. He was not violent. He was not hysterical. He was merely non-compliant to this silly law, that you must register every car you own, whether it runs or not, even if it's not driven off your private property. He'd be looking at less time if he was the neighborhood rapist.

Sorta sounds like those goody-two-shoes nut cases in gated neighborhoods. Some communities are sure out of touch with reality.

I guess in one's mind's eye, that's about the only way we as law abiding citizens could justify such a perversion of the law by the scumbags who rule over us. It's tyranny, plain and simple. Of course, Allison is not facing charges for simply having direlect vehicles on his property. The town's authorities didn't like that he was fighting back against their "lawful" thievery, and charged him with eves dropping on law enforcement. :secret:

That has to be one of the most stupid laws I have heard about. I don't see what gives the police the right to record us but we cant record them. You would think they would only have a problem if they had something to hide. I hope that guy gets off for recording them. As far as the cars go that is the reason I live outside of city limits. They cant come out here and tell me what to do.

Apparently, the supreme authorities, at all levels, local, state, and federal, can no longer tell right from wrong. They freely enact laws that increase their power and their ability to tax. The only thing government is interested in is our money. They no longer serve the people. We are their subjects and we better do what they tell us to do, and if someone doesn't like it, it's too bad. There will be hell to pay for that individual.

Oh... it's completely legal, as long as you're in a public venue. Massachussetts has been notorious about citizens filming cops. Now they've finally had their arse handed to them.

I believe as public servants everything they do or say while wearing that uniform
should be available to the public. If they are abusing their powers, everyone has
the right to know. This is a stupid law. IMO. I think the powers that be are a bit :screwy:

I believe the original purpose for the law was to keep people from hauling in vehicles for junk and creating an eyesore, however there are those seek to take advantage to use the law to, in my opinion steal that which they cannot buy at an honest price. We have a county ordinace here that allows you to have three vehicles per person living at a residence.A county board member took it upon himself to attemp to acquire my 68 Firebird using said ordinace but found himself talking to a DA and police before the vehicle was even on the hook, score one for the little guy,not enough vehicles to quantify the act!
Personally if someone has a vehicle for the expressed intention of restoring it or it has been restored and does not traverse the roads it should not need licensing for that purpose because it is a piece art.
I ask should you have to register a Van Gogh to traverse the highway?
If you check you'll probably find who ever got the vehicle is the one that leveled the complaint or did it for someone they know.

our town has the same or similiar law, the cars have to be registered and at least appear to be driveable, no flat tires etc unless of course I'm assuming if its in the garage it wouldn't apply, but I can kinda see why they might need to enforce this so people don't have wrecks just sitting around . I seen this 1 guy has like 8 cars in his driveway that never move and I think some of them aren't registered but they look fine, no flats pretty decent condition. but I can also see where people wouldn't want to pay for license plates insurance etc when the cars don't leave your property but 75 years is just out of control maybe just a fine. but just to be safe all of mine are registered and insured. since plates and insurance is so cheap for classics I thought it would just be better for me.

Our township board is inclined to be a bit radical at times, but hasn't gone anywhere near that far yet.
At the same time, people having juncky cars sitting around, not streetable etc, with hoods open etc, is just plain trashy, and needs to be controlled a bit.

I think there are two issues in this story. The first is the minor infraction of good or bad taste. When does a vehicle in disrepair bacome an eyesore? The second, and far more serious in my opinion is; when do the rights of the government supersede the rights of the people? In my opinion, the citizens of Illinios should be outraged. Surpressing independant evidence, an audio or video recording of a perpetrater, should be against the law rather than the act of recording the same. This is a law that every citizen should fight to correct. In addition, selling a seat in congress is far worse than taping the local police officer in a public place. Illinois, get your priorities straight!
