First question is "did they system leak out, and why?" Need to fix any leaks before you put expensive R12 back in. Don't want to do it over. If your system is empty, you will also need an accumulator. Change the orfice at the same time- cheap insurance. Don't buy a rebuilt compressor- they don't last. I had to re-do my system in less than 14 months. Your hoses are now 25 years old, so there is a good chance that the rubber is deteriorated to the point of needing replacement. I would also consider a new condenser. Newer designs can be had in Parallel Flow, and are much more effective.

I've converted mine to R134a, and I routinely get 38-40 degrees at the vents, even in 100+ weather. R134 costs less than $60 for the entire charge. I'm glad I converted, since I had to re-do it a couple of times to fix leaks, bad compressor, etc. If you convert to R134a, Ester oil is compatible with the old Mineral Oil. However, if you clean everything out well, use can use PAG 150 oil .

Make your decision, and if you need more info, we'll be glad to help.

You gotta go with R134a conversion. The cost and environmental impact pretty much demands it. R12 is no longer legally sold in CA and the some parts of the nation. I converted mine in '08 and it still works like a champ. The Elkies have such a small interior, you don't need much to cool it.

When my a/c compressor failed I found Vintageair.com. They have kits ready made for your El Camino. I chose the kit that included the compressor, mounting brackets, accumulator, orfice tube and hoses. When changing to 134a you need to change all rubber hoses and seals. Everything was in their kit and the only thing I had to do was have the hoses crimed after I cut them to size. The air is nice and cold even when in the 90's outside.

Listen to dabrsyan. He walked me through a complete replacement a/c under the hood. It worked the first time. I'm blowing 40 d. at any temp. outside.
Thanks
