: Almost done with AC upgrade!!!

I have been in the process of upgrading my AC system to a new compresor/condenser/dryer and I had to revise my auxillary electric fan as well. Since I live in an area noted for high heat and killer humidity AC is a must. The problem is even the best aluminum radiator will heat up pretty bad when driving in heavy/stalled traffic. I found that adding an electric fan in front of the condensor makes the ac work better and cools the engine down better too.

I added another Ford Taurus fan so I will have a pair of them now instead of just one. I had the single fan wired to come on with the ac before as I will this time but I'll have the added fan wired to a switch in the car to turn on whenever needed

All I have to do now is wire them up and take it to the ac shop to have the lines run and the system filled!!!

Looks good actually. I would suggest using the pressure switch you have mounted on the drier. It is a high/low pressure switch designed to turn the compresser off in case the pressure in the system becomes too low or too high. It should be wired in a series with the compresser clutch. The brass plug on the backside of the Seltec is a high pressure relief valve, it is designed to release refrigerant pressure in case system pressure becomes too high. Your friend did a good job on the mount too.

Thanks!

Yea, I'm going to wire in the pressure switch for sure! The mount came out great! I didn't like any of the aftermarket ones. I could have used the stock mount by enlarging the holes and making some spacers but I knew that would look trashy. We have a measuring device at work similar to a CMM so I reverse engineered the stock mount and made a drawing incorporating the Seltecs mounting points. My pal programmed his laser torch for it and the results were quite nice!

Thanks for the info on the fitting on the compressor! That was bothering me a bit. I have the factory drawing with the dimensions/ratings/capacities but it did not indicate what the brass piece is for.

Interesting setup... I had never thought of mounting fans like that.

Are you running those cooling fans as an addition to the stock fan or instead of?

I am using those or very similiar fans as a replacement for the stock fan. I have mounted then in a puller configuration by constructing a very shallow 1/2" fan shroud box out of aluminum. The fans mount up using their original Ford shrouds on the flat plate side of the box. The combination of fan shrouds and box should allow some airflow across the entire radiator although it will probably be strongest at the fan.

On the electrical side I am cloning the Taurus setup with control relays and low speed resistor. Fans will be two speed with high speed controlled by an engine temp fan control switch for a 1990 Camaro V8. Low speed, possibly in the future, will be controlled by A/C input.

I'm running mine(as pushers) in addition to the stock thermal clutch fan. Temp in the high 90s today with killer humidity and the engine temp never got over 200 in downtown traffic with the AC wide open the way I like it! :-D

I'm using a simple Derale fan control that turns the fans on with the AC or with engine temp over 195. the fan control looks pretty mickey mouse but has worked fine so far. If it makes it through the summer I figure it's going to be OK but i'm prepared to do a better controller along the lines of the Taurus set up as you are doing.

I am reluctant to rely on electric fans alone and since the only time I have any cooling issues is when the AC is on in slow traffic. Also the fans cool the AC condenser which makes the AC work better. I didn't measure the air vent temp but I am very happy with the "cold" air it's pumping out on days like this!!! 8)

Thanx for the pictures and inspiration. I've been following your D-I-Y ways since you were painting "Ole Paint" in a one car garage. Keep up the good work. One of your postings introduced me to www.ackits.com and I've learned a bunch in their forums.

Really nice fan controller from what I hear:

Yep, that looks like a very good controller! If I have any problems with the Derale unit that's what I'll try next!

BTW!
Glad to help Rick! Just trying to do what others have done for me!
