My 68 makes a jingling sound that sounds like sleighbells when I'm driving. I can hear it with the driverside window down when I drive next to something so the sound can bounce back like another car. When I go over a bump it's more prominent. It sounds like it's coming from the wheels but I've examined the drum brakes and see nothing that could be causing this sound.

It's driving me crazy  . Any ideas?

Sounds like your jingle pins are loose....

Try checking your outer sway bar bushings.

Thanks for the quick response!

I'll check the sway bar busings and see what I find. I've never heard of jingle pins...?

That's what I have always called them due to the fact that they "jingle" when worn or loose.

I checked my sway bar bushing "jingle pins" and they're intact and not jingling. I also insected the top "jingle pins" of my front shocks and found them to be tight as well. Are there any other places this jingling could be coming from. It sounds like a tamborine.

Thanks...

My '84 does the same thing, and I've found it to be worn bearings on the smog pump. I'm not going to replace it because I'm putting in a new engine in a month or so, and I only do weekend cruising right now.

It might be your axle bearings. The only way you'd probably know however would be failure of the bearing seal on the end of the axle which would be leaking a bit.

The other thing that comes to mind might be your rear control arm bushings. They might be worn as well. That is of course assuming a 68 used rear coil springs with control arms.

Just a shot at it...

I was thinking that it might be a cracked flex plate, but it's only happening when you're driving. Could it be a busted shock? How bout a exhaust pipe hanger or flange?

mine did the same thing a while back. turned out that the rubber on the stabilizer links were worn out

I had this problem on a pickup one time and it turned out to be the dust shield on the pinion bearing. It was loose and made that jingling sound when the driveshaft turned.

All great suggestions!

Well I don't have a smog pump or disk brakes. I'll have to trouble shoot these suggestions one by one. At least I know where to start.

Thanks for all the input. I'll report back.....

Fan clutches make a terrible sound when they go bad. kind of a squeaky jingley sound.
