: Tranny problems
82Rollin 05-30-2004, 09:11 PM Hey guys, I just finished installing my rebuilt 350 engine and tranny into my 82 El Karazy, The engine works fine and its really strong, but i do have one problem, When i put the tranny on drive or reverse it works but it doesnt have enough balls to move the car, so i put the four wheels on the air and put the tranny on drive, it spins but then it stops and then it keeps going again, i checked the brakes to see if they were stuck and they were ok, the compression hose from the tranny to the manifold is installed right, the cable from tranny to carb is installed right but a lil loose, the other cable from tranny works good, the only thing left to check was the flywheel and it was ok, oh and the two metal hoses to the radiator. If you guys had any problems like these let me know what you did! or if u know how to fix this please help me out.
Mrapii 06-01-2004, 03:21 PM Was the trans rebuilt? What trans is it?
bgstk 06-07-2004, 07:37 AM Did you check to be sure it's full of fluid?
82Rollin 06-08-2004, 08:11 PM yes i checked the fluid its full, and the tranny i dunno what kind of tranny it is exactly, but sumone told me sumthn bout the oil pan on the tranny, mine is the one thats square and one corner is cut
Poncho Villa 06-09-2004, 06:24 PM The pan description sounds like it's a Turbo 350. The lack of motivation description you're giving sounds like it's low on fluid to me too.
Is your tranny fluid nice bright red with a "petroleum" smell or is the fluid brown and smells burnt? If the latter, it may be rebuild / replace time I think.
82Rollin 06-09-2004, 07:40 PM i'm gonna go ahead and check the fluid, the tranny is brand new, never been used, first time it has been set into a car,i had someone built it for me, its got a shift kit in it, how many quarts of fluid fit in there?, i know i put 5 qts.
Mrapii 06-09-2004, 07:51 PM Five quarts is about half of the total capacity. Do you know how to check the fluid level?
WarPony 06-09-2004, 08:29 PM Mrappi is right, if you put in a new torque converter, 5 qts. will almost fill that - ALMOST! Depending on the size of the TC, it may take 13 to fill it and the rest of the passages. You have to check the fluid level when it's HOT and running in park because the fluid will expand as it gets hotter and if you overfill it can foam causing slippage and transmission damage. Dump in another 3 quarts, warm up the engine without driving it and keep adding a quart at a time until it gets to the "SAFE" level. With your foot on the brake, SLOWLY go into each gear all the way down to L1 then back up to Park. Keep doing that until you can feel the Reverse - N - Drive engage quickly then go drive it around and then check the fluid level again and add if necessary.
82Rollin 08-01-2004, 07:54 PM thanx for all the help guys, problem is solved
80elcamino 08-02-2004, 10:45 AM well, what was it that fixed it? Fluid?
82Rollin 08-05-2004, 07:31 PM yes some fluid made it happen, thnx again!
Tommy 08-06-2004, 12:47 PM One thing to remember too, that to much fliud is almost as bad as not enough. Check it several times to make sure.
