I was doing some project management and noticed that the speedo cable goes right behind the trans crossmember where I would notch it to put on a set of headers. I don't want to fry the speedo cable so do I do with it? :?

Remove it until you are finished the re-install it.

it just unscrews from the tranny

do you mean where do you put it while cutting, or do you mean the headers are gonna cook it??

I've got a similar problem. but now I need a new cable. The thing is 7 foot long.
Generics are 6 foot and the only one i can find that will reach are 9-10 foot (way to long) and i don't want to snake it around.

Any Idea for a NEW cable of this length?

Just in case, it screws into the trans but slides onto the speedo head.

~Thanks in advance!

In one of the first shops that I worked in we used to make speedo cables; I'm pretty sure that a local speedo shop could make you a custom lenght cable.

don't think I have a speedo shop here (small town).
If I had an application I could go to auto zone or Advance.

I have had no problems with my cable & header heat yet.

Have you looked into a Lokar Cable? Lokar make Speedo Cables, Throttle Cables, Dipsitcks (Engine and tranny) and lots of other stuff that you can cut to the necessary length.

Its a thought.

Motorbreth has got the right idea, where can I put it so i won't fry the cable?

Just tie it to the top of your crossmember. It should be fine.

Just wrap it with a section of heat shield material like you wrap your starter or headers with.

Just wrap it with several layers of aluminum foil at the point that will be near the heat source. Aluminum Foil is one of the best insulators around, the price is right, it will not rust and will probably outlast you and I. However, it will discolor pretty quickly, but since it would be under the vehicle, what the heck.

Thanks guys that makes sense. I would have tied it to the crossmember but I figured I would ask anyway in case someone had a different idea.
