I have a 1980 el camino. I put a 350 that came from a 72 Chevy 1500. Which came from it or a camaro of a similar year. My problem is that my starter won't start my car. It engages and starts right after I put the starters on but after I drive the car and it get warned up it is done. It will not start. Not even a day or week later. What's the problem??

Do you get any noise from it and what does it sound like?
Sent from my PC and proud of it.

It's like it won't mesh the gears right. It's an awful noise

You may need to pick up a couple of starters shims in the HELP section at the parts house and check and adjust the gear mesh.

x2 with the shims....also, I think there may be flywheels w/a different number of teeth. Perhaps its the wrong starter gear for your flywheel. Not sure on this, sure the experts will correct me if i'm wrong.

"Oh what a memory this bring back".
After I did the motor swap to the 383,I had the same issue. I broke the heads off 3 Autozone starters when I installed them without shims. I put 3 in and that worked for about two days. I finally got fed up and purchased a high torque mini starter from Skip White Performance on ebay. Once I got it,I put the 2 shims in that came with it and no problems what so ever. In all,I dropped those AZ starters about 30 times.(no joke)
The new mini starter only set me back 70 bux shipped with a lifetime warranty plus it saved me the headache. So what I'm sayin is,get rid of the b.s. AZ starters that are rebuilt, and go with a brand new mini starter from Skip White.
Juss sayin....

Shims made it worse. And I think there is a crack in the bolt hole in my block. Timing was too advanced, put strain on bolt hole, shifted starter and caused problems. Thanks for the input!!
