Help. I have an '82 El Camino that has been lowered with BellTech drop spindles and backed up with new heavy duty springs and coil over shocks. The car still bottoms out the tires in the wheel wells and has ruined the tires and the plastic wheel well. the tires are on factory rims and have 245/60/14 tires which will be replaced soon probally with 225/60/14 any help to stop the destruction would be great.

Well obviously the car is too low. Are the heavy duty springs lowering springs? If you combine the Bell Tech spindles and lowering springs you can get over 3" of drop. Increase your ride height.

I've always wondered about this subject. Most of the car shows I see, the inner wheel wells are either severely modified or not even there. In the front that is. In the rear I'm sure that there must also be some mods. I'd only be interested in lowering my 80 an inch or so, just to give it a better stance. But if the tires are too wide I'm sure you'd either have to extend the wells out some or get an extreme offset to the inside.
I'll keep reading the following posts.

If you keep the wheel/tire size within limits you can leave the inner fenderwells as is. I have 1 1/2" lowering springs and I use a 235/45 tire on a 17X8 wheel with 4 1/2" backspacing and after a slight adjustment to the steering stops (on the lower A arms) it works fine with no interference at all. If you remove the inner fender wells and roll the wheel lips you can use a considerably bigger tire. The 235/45 front tires and 255/50 rear tires have a fairly large footprint and make the Elky handle quite well. By the way if you are into rolling wheel lips The Eastwood Company has a new tool for that job that looks real slick.

The only lowering I have done is the belltech spindels. The springs are factory ride height and have a fixed spring rate of 1450lbs. My fender lip opening is almost exactly one inch lower than my other elky which sits on the same springs with all it's factory parts in place. I think my next move can only be to put the factory spindels back on and give up this dream of pulling greater than one G on the skid pad. Thanks for the help I'll just have to keep trying.

By "bottoming out" what exactly do you mean? Are the tops of the tires hitting the top of the plastic inner fender wells or are you taking up all of the suspension travel and hitting the suspension stops on the control arms? In either case it doesn't seem possible that a 1" drop is going to cause any of these problems. My '79 has an almost 2" front suspension drop via springs and only very rarely will the front suspension contact the suspension stops. Having the suspension bottom out at times is normal and the stops are there for that very reason.

Yes that is exactly what I mean. The plastic has been rubbed through and the tires have been ruined from contact with what was the plastic inner fender well. Now the metal of the fender it's self is showing through and rubbing. I know just about everyone has a car lower than mine with no problems so that's the part I don't understand. If the cross member were hitting the ground or the oil pan I could see where the car is too low the springs are bad or something, but to be rubbing the inner fender is not making any sense. I would remove it but the protection it provides and the mounting location for most of my electronics is there, I.E. MSD box fuel pressure regulator and so fourth. Thanks for all your help if I keep playing with spring rates hopefully I'll find a cure.

Are the bumps tops on the top of the control arms in place. These bump stops prevent what is happening to your tires and inner fenderwells.

Instead of a suspension problem,it kinda sounds like a wheel backspacing problem. What width wheels are you running? What is the backspace on them?
