: Interior woes ahead?
Rags0442 12-04-2011, 09:01 AM So I finally bought another El Camino, 1987 5th. generation model. I got it from an estate sale, and the previous owner had died several years ago ( one owner vehicle and UNMOLESTED ! ). It's loaded, and has the factory bucket seats and console, all things considered, I purchased it on the spot.
It was so clean that I overlooked several areas. Now after replacing all the belts, changing fluids, and cleaning up the engine bay I'm ready for the interior. The horn, door locks, interior lights, power windows, and radio don't work. The heater is stuck on vent and floor however, I've been reviewing the forum and will follow up on hoses and valve in dash.
I've yet to look at the fuse box, but it occurs to me that " if " these fuses are blown, there must be a reason? Any thoughts would be appreciated. And are there any things that should be replaced other than the vaccum hoses while I'm under and all over the dash?

jlcustomz 12-04-2011, 10:22 AM Corrosion on contact points would be my first thought. Also, a blown [or corroded] fuse doesn,t 100% mean there is a problem like a short. I,d clean any questionable connectors & fuses[Even if it looks ok] & start over.

All controlled by a 20-amp fuse in the panel. It starts out with "assry" I believe. How do I know? Had same problem, and that cured it.
minoridertim 12-04-2011, 07:13 PM Welcome, from Texas! :texas::Welcome!:

Rags0442 12-08-2011, 05:54 AM Haven't checked the fuse box yet however, I appreciate the information on the fuse assembly ( Bruce ), sounds like I might be worried over something simple. And thanks Beer Drinker for the outstanding shots of your stereo system, looks fantastic!
lilbaggie 12-08-2011, 06:47 AM Your fuse problem could be as simple as having the car jump started.
I had that fuse blown a few weeks ago when the auto glass shop drained my battery working on the car. They used a quick charge/starter. Freaked me out as I didn't realize it until the drive home and thought they had blown out my stereo! Very relieved to find it was just a 20A fuse…
jarhead 12-08-2011, 07:38 AM Another welcome from Texas.. BUT.. without pictures, how do we know you really have an Elky? hmmm?:poke:
hagensen 78 12-08-2011, 03:03 PM Welcome from Idaho.
Rags0442 02-09-2012, 05:16 AM Well, today I finally removed the cigar lighter and replaced the fuse again, it didn't blow out this time. So the short was the lighter assembly. :nanawrench:
Interesting to note the unit looked new and the previous owner never smoked however, after looking at the lighter unit after being removed I saw that it was tweeked inside.
Also, while Napa had the part cheap, there are no lighter assemblies made in the USA. That sucks!! I hate China automobile parts!!!:let_it_all_out:
steelybill 02-09-2012, 03:22 PM Unfortunately, we are mostly stuck with Chinese parts. Some stuff is made OK. Best to inspect the product before laying out the cash :smileyb:
russvf 02-09-2012, 03:33 PM I would not get a carpet from OEM. Mine did not fit and I had to recut and sew it to fit properly. I am talking about 1.5" excess fold in front passenger side. I cannot recommend where to get a good one.
Rags0442 02-10-2012, 03:07 AM O.K. Jarhead, as soon as I fugure a way to post a photo I'll be happy to show you one nice looking 1987 Elky.
By the way, since I was looking for a cruck, and it took several years and a purchase of a 1979 Ranchero a few years ago. Just wanted you to know I " Gave " the Ranchero to my son, a former Marine. The Ranchero is clean and looks great ( for a roaming road tank ), and he loves that cruck.............LOL!
