My town is full of people in crappy little beat up, paint peeling, dented, little tiny, front wheel drive cars with aluminum wing/spoiler bolted to the trunks. Now I'm all one for accessorizin but these people will bolt a $250 wing onto a $100 car. I don't know if they think the car looks cool with it or what but it just makes them look foolish. Yes, I have seen nice cars that look pretty cool with that stuff but when you take the crappiest little mazda you can find in the junkyard and put a wing, spinners, and neon license plate frame on it is simply ignorant. And there are clumps of these cars hanging out in parking lots and stuff. They probably have Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engines under the hood.

I idle past them in my shiny red elky with my V8 purring nice and low and watch them as their heads follow me as I pass and I thank sweet baby jesus for my El Camino. It may not be in the best condition but it's got a decent paint job nicely waxed and shiny and what I think are nice old fashion style shiny wheels. I don't know how much $$$ they have into their crap-boxes but I couldn't be happier in my $1200 Chevrolet.

To each their own but I would spend my dollars on making my car presentable before bolting on all the extras from auto-zone and pep-boys.

But then again, when I got my first car, a '79 pontiac phoenix (not an attractive looking car) I spent alot of time at Pep-Boys looking at all the accessories and colored lights and crap so maybe it's just part of the same phenomenon of wanting a quick fix of something for the car.

My town has a bunch of that stuff too. It's mostly high school kids with a ricer and a loud stereo. I don't get it but it might be the same thing as having a Camaro, N-50's on slotted mags and some glasspacks back in the day. When it rained, everybody had a hotrod!!!!!!!! I'm 35 and when I was in high school I saw the "old" guys with the 50's and 60's hotrods but knew not to F with them. Probably the same thing. Just a passing of the torch. Then again, some punks have to learn the hard way!! No replacement for displacement!!!!!!

I have the little buzzing nats wanting to race me all the time in my 2002 Camaro. They get a funny look on their face when all I do is look at them and laugh.

May be a passing of the torch but the flame seems a little dim. To each their own I guess.

In one of my (many) hot rod or chevy high performance mags,
they speak of this.
Ol' man Baskerville said it very nicely I think,
The hot rodders of the 50's took what they could afford and 'suped em up
with the money and ingenuity that they had at their disposal.
(cars from the 20's and 30's that were cast off.)

kinda like the proverbial *** **** cans that we all see.

The only thing that disturbes me is that Chevy and Ford are not really trying to build the foundation anymore.

Camaro is gone...
Ford has the Mustang still but high priced for a kid just going into college...

It sucks that these companies are aiming at global when their primary market is right in thier back yard.

just my penny...

She won't give me both at the same time...

Yea there's quite afew high-school ricers around, but keep in mind that not all high-schoolers are punk ricers. I for one, refused to get some crap car and rice it out. My borther, well he's a different story. But let's just keep in mind that stereotyping is bad, because im still in high-school and I am the damn proud owner of a 1970 el camino. So there's a lot of high-school ricers, but let's not forget those who have soem taste.

I agree. I find a lot of the youngster's give me thumbs up or even offer to race me, which I take as a sign of respect and admiration for my 72 Elky. I like some of the cars they drive too, although I wouldnt personally own one - more for the fact that I have many classic's on my 'wish' list that I would rather spend my money on, rather than that I do not like the 'ricers'.

like the saying goes...I miss the good old days...when you could pick up a 5 year old used Nova, Chevelle or what have you for a couple of hundred dollars, drop in a small block from the vast assortment in the boneyards, throw a dual exhaust and 8 track in and go cruising. Or if you were really well off, walk in to your local dealer and pick up a new GTO, Corvette or Hemi Road Runner and go win some cash down at the Orange Julip.
Now you pay more for a 4cyl Sh&tbox than I paid for my first house.
Sigh....did I say I miss the good ol days? :(

I don't mind the enthusiasm of the younger ones, hell I had stupid mudflaps Vinyl eagle decals on the door pillars, rear window louvers on and other tacky add ons on my first car (an 81 camaro) and god only knows how many really bad stereos and "power boosters" I put in the poor thing. Oh and don't get me started on how many times I "tweaked" the computer controlled carb only to screw it up worse than when I started.

ANyway the point is, we all did it and it got us where we are now so that part of it is ok with me.

What I don't like is the attitude. At least around here there is a really bad vibe going through the ricer crowd. I don't see any respect at all for anyone including themselves. I wish I could say its just me getting old but it's more than that.

For example; I was coming home one night and a carload of punks like those I just mentioned damn near ran me off the road. Luckily I had already been watching them in my rear view and didn't get into any trouble. On their way by however, they threw a bag of garbage at my car and it hit my front driver's fender and mirror.

That pissed me off so I followed them down to their house staying about 1/8th mile back from them. I pulled up near the house just as they were all getting ready to go inside still laughing. One of the punks noticed me and came up and tried to give me lip at which point I just picked up my cell, dialed the cops and gave the info.

The punk looked like he was gonna soil himself and took off running screaming "He called the cops, he called the cops!" Funniest thing I ever saw as they all tried to pile into the piece of crap they were driving while the car was moving.

I haven't seen them around here anymore.

Same thing is happening here and many of them are well done. But the other day at the local Auto Zone I saw one of these with a wing made out of wood. A few 1" board held together with angle brackets. Oh, it was also painted primer grey to match the car.

In Daytona I see tons of these things. Now I don't care when people do the stuff to civics, but I have seen several newer grand am type cars that people are putting these body kits on, man its pathetic. And today I saw an erector set wind that stood about 2 feet off the trunk.

Iam in high school and i now a 67 elky. Damn proud too. I hate it thow when they think they can race and win aginst my car with over 400 hp and 450 tq ( i have a 383 stroker ) Also the other day couple of kids that drive ricers keyed my friends 79 sabb and dumped pepsi all over it and down thew the ac vent . They do it to get back at us becouse they now there cars will never be as cool or fast as are's.

Well, the ricers are easier to get used to than some of the crap I see around here. Is it just in the south or is it all over? What is it with these old hoopties that look like they'd barely make it down the street, but they have $3500 22" spinning rims and $4500 sound system on them? The car prob didn't cost but a few hundred dollar. I guess someone would rather have nice wheels and loud sound system than a decent looking ride. It's so funny to see them riding all layed back like they have some cool azz ride. :whatthat:

im also in highschool and i have a 1986 el camino, i have also seen some pretty horrible examples of "rice". Last year when i was only a freshman i saw what looked like an early 90's dodge neon with a full unpainted bodykit, a 2' tall spoiler and the words CASH MONEY across the windshield. Im just waiting for the day one of them asks me to race since ive already been told that some ones 4 cylinder chrystler can blow away my el camino.

Hey gr8, I may be dating myself, but the way the kids lay way back and slouch down in the seat was called "Ratch Back" in my day. So, it's nothig new. It was a cry for attention then and it is still a cry for attention.

huh... i "ratch-back" in my car all the time then. very comfortable. not so much for attention though... maybe its just me. as for the ricers we have a few around here. the other night i passed two of them in a ditch right near my house accompanied by two cop cars. it seems while they were driving their japanesse super cars they must have been going so fast that they didnt see the turn in the road or the barbed wire fence that guarded the roadside. i actually saw them earlier that day showing off thier coffee can exhaust trying to empress me. then i saw them even later after thier fence fun, driving 25 back towards town followed by a car (possibly thier mommy's) with its hazard lights on. i passed them and smiled.

im in high school but go to a tech school so we got a broad mix of people from the ricer to the muscle car worshippers to the 4 wheelers. im one of few muscle car worshippers that actuallay has a muscle car, or kinda i mean 185 horse aint much to brag about but that little 305 mill will still smoke any of the fart cannoned ricers in the parking lot. i think my closest competition besides my buddies trans am is a beretta z26 thats pretty sad considering how little power my car makes.i havent started driving yet and wont till september but my mom drives my car and races the ricers because she just thinks its funny. she says my el camino would have been taosted if she still had 68 mustang though.

I have two boys (17 & 18) and since I got my 69 ELKY last year all I hear is how cool it is to have an old man with a muscle car. My 18 year old has a really nice 68 Chevelle that he's fixing up now and all he can say is that his friends all like the old cars / hotrods / customs. They see alot of ricers around but always turn their heads when they hear the sound of flowmasters coming. Ya Baby nothing like the US Muscle, a blast from the past is really what sweet!

I'm in high school, I drive a 83 Diesel El Camino, not very fast but I don't pretend it is like the rest of my school with their Civics and V6 Mustangs. But anyway, In my town every Friday night people take their old muscle cars up to Burger King and show them off. There is probably like 20 cars up there. And for some reason these kids take their pos s10's and ford rangers and park them up there and they all have those blinking lights in the headlights area, and they just sit off to the side blinking their lights with their hoods up. So I decide to walk over there thinking maybe they had something done to their engine because their hoods were up, but not to my surprise they were absolutly stock, besides the blinking lights... I just dont get it

Over at a buddy of mines apartment there are about 3 cars with blinking LED's in their turn signal housings. They're pretty much just plane jane cars and I don't think they're teenager's rides either.

I just thought it was a new way of mounting a flashing alarm LED. I noticed the lights flashed in unison with the interior alarm light but that could have been coincidence.

And as for the ricer crowd well I remember seeing one on my way to a friends house on the freeway one night. Looked like an acura someting and it just blew right by me on the off ramp which was annoying but then I had instant poetic justice.

See this ramp turns like 60 degrees and if you don't know it and pull the turn too fast you end up going down an embankment made up of all these little crushed up granite rocks.

Which is exactly what happened. Moron tore out the bottom of his car at about 85 cuz he didn't know about the turn. It's like he didn't even try to stop just went right off. I never even saw his brake lights come on.

I called highway patrol and such but didn't see anything much after that.

Was funny tho. Probably shrunk his ego by about 6 feet! :-D

We have a few of them here, they learn very quickly that you just don't mess with the old muscle cars. I've seen two of them here where the guys go out and buy Autometer tachs with shift lights just cause they look cool, after hooking them up they don't understand why they don't work. I try to explain that they can't run the factory tach in the dash and another mounted tach at the same time. Then they ask how to unhook the factory tach...... got me I don't work on rice. The last two that decided my El Camino couldn't beat them, got shut down instantly. I give them one car length off the light then eat them up.... that cured them from even thinking about it next time. The cops here keep a close eye on them, when most of them get pulled over the K-9 unit usually shows up to sniff them out. A few of them get busted, car towed to impound and a date with the court judge. They even get to have their names posted to the police log in the local paper for free.

Keep in mind the youngsters seen "The fast and the furiest" with all the Hollywood BS making the ricers look fast. Most of them don't understand that they're not fast in real life. I never seen a crapload of ricers till after that movie came out !!!

Ya know what I like best about the fast and the furious movie. The part where the big cool villan guy says that his father's black 69 charger scares the hell out of him. All that ricer rocket crap he deals with and the thing that scares him is an old charger with a B&M blower and a hilborn scoop poking out the hood. 8)

that's a tip of the hat to old school if I ever saw one.

I saw the second movie the other day on cable and I actually liked it better than the first. When it came time to do some real business they pulled out the real muscle and left the candy cars home. Much better movie.

Didn't have any Elkys in the movie though. Had a chevelle or two... :)
