: How to tell if I have an SS
SSelkokid87 12-20-2011, 01:43 PM Hi just recently purchased an 87 el camino. As you can see in my profile. My question is. Is my Elki an SS. It has a 55/45 bench. It has a spoiler and stripe kit on the sides? How can I verify that it is a true SS? I paid 1100 for it! :?

Do a "Search" on Super Sport (SS) verification
or words to that effect.
I am sure you are not the first to ask this question...
87next2last1 12-21-2011, 08:22 AM You can tell by your RPO codes listed on a label in the glove box ! The code your looking for is Z15 !! The SS package is mostly Paint & decals !!
gilby 12-21-2011, 08:59 AM ...I don't know if this works on 5th gens. or not,but Ithink its on the trim tag, if it starts out as "1AD80" its a "Delux" if its "1AC80" its custom,and thats what your looking for in a S/S, Classic, and Conquista....:dontknow::dontknow::beer:

BINGO!!! And Steve wins the prize of the day. An RPO of his choice!!:secret::You_Rock:
mattendres 12-21-2011, 10:37 AM Yup, Steve has it right. You cannot tell by the vin, you have to look at the RPO codes in your glove box. The proper code is Z15, and the package is just an appearance package for 87.
That included the front air damn and the two tone paint job. Since you have those two things, pretty sure you will see Z15 in your RPO codes, unless someone took the time change it after the fact.
The with the appearance packages (if you are interested) was the SS is as above, the Conquista was two tone, but the upper third was the same as the lower third and had a chrome trim around the wheels. The base model was just a single color.
gilby 12-21-2011, 10:51 AM ...Well,I'm guessing ,that I'm the first loser, right..???:poke::beer:
gilby 12-21-2011, 10:56 AM BINGO!!! And Steve wins the prize of the day. An RPO of his choice!!:secret::You_Rock:
...well,what did you expect from a guy who's own a "Red Headed Step-child" anyway..?!!...:poke::beer:
my87custom 12-21-2011, 11:38 AM so a two-tone is conquista? i always said i had just a base model. but i have the two tone dark and light blue on my '87. have i been wrong?
84elcoconquista 12-21-2011, 12:02 PM My87custom: from your picture, looks like a conquista!!
And some things too look for on the SS, (decor)
-SS decals
-console
-shifter in The console
-non functional side pipes
I thought i had a SS too but i dont, some elcos dont have the codes in the glove box. For some reason mine was on my owners manual which i have a z13 ( not z15). Check your owners manual if you have it. But to be sure check the RPO codes and also paint codes.
Examples of paint codes
L-67- same
M-67- same====DELUXE
H-67- same
L-67-same
M-62-different===Conquista
H-67-same
L-67-same
M-67-same=== SS
H-62-different
Hope this helps
mattendres 12-21-2011, 12:04 PM Well, two tone is either SS or Conquista. Look at Steve's post in his signatures and click on them. The first one is a conquista, so it is two tone, but it has dark gray on the top and bottom 3rds, and a light color in the middle. You'll also see chrome trim around the wheels and down the lines that separate the colors on the sides.
His second Elco is an SS, but he has repainted it. Still, he has one color on the bottom second, but he blended that into the rest of the truck, which is another color in the middle and top sections. You'll see he HAD some chrome trim, but not as much (he has blacked it all out for that extra sporty look).
If you hit my gallery in my sig, you will see my SS, which is a decent color difference and is setup (besides the rims) to be just like stock in appearance.
my87custom 12-21-2011, 12:13 PM hmmm. interesting.
is there anyway to confirm it is? I had the car repainted. it was light blue on top and bottom along road with dark blue in middle.
but now is dark blue from chrome trim on top of cab and bed, down to frame. (just for that slightly custom look if you know what to look for) and light blue still on top.
can i check somewhere to find out for sure it is conquista? like RPO or something?

Just a couple things, in 84-87 an SS Elco did not have SS decals (those went away with the Choo Choo customs models). And the console (floor) shifter was an option, but did not come with the SS package (my SS came from the factory as column shift). Same with the side pipes, the only exhaust they had from the factory in those years and in all 5th gens to my knowledge (might be wrong about the latter), was a single exhaust exiting behind the passenger side rear tire.
The SS package (Z15) was just an literally the front air damn and the two tone paint scheme (but one color top, one bottom, not in thirds like the conquista).

D91 was the RPO for conquista. Listed on the 8th page above (not counting blank pages):beer:

If you still have the RPO label in the glovebox, Look at the bottom & it will give you the codes for the original paint !!
Here is mine !
Enamel WA- L8535 U8573 82B
That ='s LOWER Silver Metallic UPPER Med. Dark Metallic Med.Dk. Gray, I guess B = Bench !
my87custom 12-21-2011, 02:54 PM yup. its still there. it reads as follows
L8592 U8574 B27
which would make mine....?
84elcoconquista 12-21-2011, 03:14 PM Fron the previous info avout your pain i am pretty sure you have a conquista. There are paint codes under the hood right by the driver side wiper arm
my87custom 12-21-2011, 06:29 PM cool beans.
thanks for helping keep me updated !:You_Rock:
SSelkokid87 12-21-2011, 07:17 PM So by what you guys see in the pic. Would you guys say its an SS? I don't have a center console. I know my 82 was a SS with a column shifter?
87next2last1 12-21-2011, 07:18 PM Lower is Dark blue metallic upper is Light blue metallic bench dark blue
As stated before look for RPO code D91 = paint two-tone
& look for code BX8 = body side moldings
If you have those 2 RPO codes then it's a conquista !!
mattendres 12-21-2011, 07:24 PM You do not need a center console for it to be an SS. Again, SS was an exterior appearance package, that was really just a front air damn and the specific two tone paint scheme. Z15 RPO code.
SSelcokid87, from the look of your avatar, with the front air damn, you likely have an SS.
SSelkokid87 12-21-2011, 07:34 PM Cool thanks a lot guys! Appreciate the info!:You_Rock:

Finding the RPO codes is the only sure way to know. But if you can't locate them, another way to tell is the trim piece in between your door windows and the small quarter windows...on an SS the trim will be all black, if it has chrome then it is not an SS. When trying to make an SS clone, that is a minor detail that almost nobody changes. Also, if you can't find the decal in the glove box, some RPO codes will be on the cowl tag. But the cowl tag will not always have the Z15 code, even if it is an SS.
SSelkokid87 12-22-2011, 07:29 PM Yup small quarter window trim is black.
LOCKJAW 12-22-2011, 07:59 PM I thought Chevrolet always badged their Super Sport models. Was this discontinued during the last iteration ?
SSelkokid87 12-22-2011, 08:27 PM Another member told me they stopped badging them on 86 the choo-choo's were the last ones.
LOCKJAW 12-22-2011, 08:45 PM "we don't need no stinkin badges !"

I took this from my 1987 GM brochure !! See where it say's pin-striping decals !! 1987 ChooChoo SS were the only one with SS decals !
SSelkokid87 12-22-2011, 08:51 PM It is an SS! Thanks to all for the info!:You_Rock:
86 choo-choo 01-02-2012, 05:34 PM Then all Choo Choo's are SS's---I got SS embroideried in 3 1/2 inch letters on my headrestes --is that an option:dontknow:,took off all the SS on outside of car(looks cheap) my $.02
E-Man 01-03-2012, 11:59 AM Then all Choo Choo's are SS's---I got SS embroideried in 3 1/2 inch letters on my headrestes --is that an option:dontknow:,took off all the SS on outside of car(looks cheap) my $.02
"SS" embroidery on the headrests was not factory GM or Choo Choo, but still a nice custom touch.

i'm nearly positive the 80' camino i'm seriously considering buying is a royal knight and i understand not all rpo's will display the z15 code.
my question is what will the rpo display? the third line on this rpo contains 4 dashes where i believe the z15 should be.
02A ----2 820 660
i've decoded the rest fine except for the dashes. :dontknow:
any help is appreciated
and thanks for the site!
87next2last1 02-28-2012, 08:46 PM looks like my parts book say's the code for the knights are Z16 !
78-81 black knight
82-84 royal knight
North60 02-28-2012, 09:22 PM indeed sir!
thank you - please read z16

Even if Z16 is not on the cowl tag, it doesn't necessarily mean you don't have a Royal Knight. But the only sure way to know is to find the build sheet...usually under the driver's seat, or in the headliner on 5th Gens. If you can't find the build sheet, order a vehicle invoice from gmmediaarchive.com and you will have your answer.
