Hi all,
I have been using a product that I thought worthy of sharing – Undergone from the Eastwood company. It is made to remove undercoating from your underbody or frame. Attached are images of the frame of my 79 as it was covered when new in Ziebart rust protection. The stuff was pretty thick but more or less preserved the frame. Now I have been stuck with the daunting task of cleaning it all off to paint the frame before the drive train could be installed. Undergone is a citrus based cleaner, so it is not harmful to the environment and does not produce toxic fumes while you are using it. Simply spray the stuff on and let it set for a few minutes – it starts to soften the undercoating and you scrape it off. It will take a few coats and a lot of elbow grease. I finished off the task with lacquer thinner on paper towels and as you can see there is a shiny clean steel frame under all that gack. The only tools I used are a putty knife and a flexible steel scraper for all the contours and where all the factory booger welds were. For the final lacquer thinner cleaning I wore a charcoal respirator and chemical gloves and ran the exhaust fan as this portion is quite toxic. Now I will clean up the weld boogers with a grinder and coat and paint the frame with POR-15 for final assembly.
