yesterday i spent the day replacing the fusible link from the starter. the car died while running.all lights and horn workrd, but the ignition swicth was dead. i solved the problem, but, the cables that i spliced with the fusible link were two thick cables joined by a "plastic part " that looks like a fuse holder, but is a solid part. i had to remove that part and use two fusible links instead. what is that plastic part?. what is it supposed to do?. is it ok that i removed it?. thanks.

Elka79,
I think what you have described is the stock GM fuseable link. These links, I believe, destroy themselves once they burn up and have to be cut off and replaced. Just be sure to replace the in-line fuse with the same amperage fuse. In my experiences it also help to solder all connections and use some split plasic tubing to shield wires from heat and water. Good luck, I hope this answers your question.
