: differences bewteen 76 and 77? IanBurkhart 06-16-2004, 01:09 AM I just bought an El Camino from the guy down my street and he said he is pretty sure it's a 77'. I looked through some pictures and as far as i can tell the 76 and 77 look the same. Does anyone know any small differences i might not have noticed? -Ian elcamino74guy 06-16-2004, 01:57 AM Check the 6th digit of the vin on the dash that will tell you the model year. Like 1D80Ux. Where x is the last digit of the two digit year. I'm pretty sure it didn't change till 81 when all the Vin #'s got longer. Caminokid 06-16-2004, 02:04 AM I have an early 77 so it has the 76 plastic grill...it has the horizonal lines. The late 77 has a criss cross pattern. Like elcamino74guy said check the vin and that will be the best way to tell it. Elky77 06-16-2004, 08:32 AM Every 77 I've ever seen, including mine, has vertical bars on the grill. I bought it brand new and ordered it from the factory. It had the vertical bar grill. The crisscross grill was on the 1976 El Camino, and the same theme was present with the Chevelle also. Just check a promotional brochure and you will see. There was a cheap model 1977 that had two round headlights, very rare in the El Camino, but it had the same vertical bar grill. Eric elcamino74guy 06-19-2004, 12:17 AM A 77 with round headlights??? Must have had some 74 front ends lying around. I am curious however as to 75's. Did they have the stacked headlights yet or still round?? I seem to remember seeing both and being confused about it. Although now that I have the front end apart I can see how it easily it can be done. Anybody with a 75 or 76 clue me in! :-D Caminokid 06-22-2004, 08:20 PM My 77 SS has the round headlights. I have never seen another one like mine. I have a pic fron the original owner when he bought it new.
