Not in my Cruck but my daily driver(2006 Silverado). I took it to the dealer today because it had an internal engine noise that I couldn't track down. Anyhow they are saying that my cam and lifters are scored and need replacement to the tune of $3600! It only has 64000mi. I have changed the oil on time and used Mobil1 synthetic. Any ideas what could have caused this? Is it a problem in the 4.8? I was hoping to put a 383 crate motor in my 72 Camino this Spring but now I need to spend the money on this. I'm really bummed.

My first thought is get a 2nd opinion. I know a bit on LS engines, but not much on the 4.8 versions. Other than small displacement, should be the same basic engine inside as the larger versions. If there is a cam problem, don,t see it costing that much. Maybe talk to a local engine rebuilder capable of late models.

They tore it down and the cam and lifters were scored. They saved the parts for me. They are giving me a 12mo. 12000 warrenty on the work. I just can't believe it just went. It was still running good, it just was making a strange whirling sound. I am very careful about maintenance on my vehicles.

I've heard the the 4.8 and 5.3 are bad for ruining cams.

Bad for ruining cams? I've heard of no such thing. It's no different than an LS1. I've got nearly 160k on mine.

Now... every now and then, some do have oiling problems.

$3600 is rediculous, sounds like that one comes without vaseline!

find a nice 218/220 duration cam, or even a little smaller. the 4.8 doesn't need a huge cam, won't do you much good. a lot of guys will also put the LS6 cam in the 5.3's and 4.8's for some extra pep.

is your engine VVT or DOD? they will have to pull the heads to put the new lifters in, but $3600 is way too much! you can buy a brand new crate LS327 for less than that!
