Part number 1403 edelbrock 500 cfm elec. choke. It says on the box not for use or sale on pollution controlled motor vehicles. Will this make the car run like crap if I use it? If it would what else would I have to change To make it run like it should? I also plan to swap out the manifold for an edelbrock performer manifold, and the distributor with a new accel hei unit and a new coil and wires as well. I don't want to put this stuff on just to have to take it off because it runs like crap.
It is an 84 with the 305 and a Q-jet
Thanks in advance

500 is a little small. What motor do you have?

It is a 305. It says on the box for small displacement V8's.

It will not pass smog tests, but can be made to run OK. However, at 500 cfm, you will not be happy with performance after the Qjet. It will not have enough power to "pull a wet setting hen off the nest". And when you kick it, you will think you just threw out an anchor.
I went through all this with a Holly.

500cfm on a 305 is more than enough carb, it should run fine.

You would be wise to put all the emissions stuff in a box and put it in a safe place where you can get to it easily because it is only a matter of time before you will be forced to go through emissions testing. The only way to pass is to have all the emissions components in place regardless of how well the exhaust gas reads. There is a visual test that must be passed where the inspectors look under the hood to make sure all the emissions components are installed. It does not have to work properly, just be installed and then pass the tail pipe gas test.

I got it inspected twice when I got it. (failed due to ball joints) both times they never did so much as pop the hood. I live in West Virginia and there is no tailpipe emmissions check(YET, knock on wood...........

Just wait! Emissions testing is coming for everyone. It's just a matter of time. The older your vehicle, the more difficult it will be to find good used parts for the emissions system. I have heard that manufacturers are forced by the feds to stock all emission systems components, but my money says they will get increasingly expensive as time passes.
