If you are talking about cleaning the outside of the block I would recommend the POR15 cleaner, prep, and paint process.

I used this system on my 383 stroker and the results were outstanding.
But you have to closely follow the application sequence properly.

and it's not an inexpensive product.

Wire wheel it first to get as much off as possible then use laquer thinner in a spray bottle and a small brush like a toothbrush and a small flat blade screwdriver for the harder to get to or harder to get off stuff and do a final spray with laquer and wipe it off then you should be ready to paint it.

I would also put plastic or some type of pan under the engine to keep the stuff off the floor. Brake parts cleaner will also work. While you have it apart, run taps through the bolt holes, I would use a older tap and not a new one to keep from cutting new threads.

Well, rather than a tap, there are dedicated thread chasers (or sometimes called thread restorers). They won't cut and they do a fine job of clearing out the crap. I bought a complete set for both SAE and metric.

This is really one of those tools you need to have.

If you want a final cleaning, get a tub it will fit in and soak it 24 hours in Tide laundry detergent. Not some other brand, the dry granular Tide. Old timers trick. Have to dry it really well after

Tape off the deck surfaces and mask the lifter valley and spray it down with oven cleaner. Let it soak, wear rubber gloves and safety goggles and scrub it with a wire brush. Hose it off with water afterward.

Just to put in my 2 cents keep in mind that some cleaners will eat up the bearings if it gets on them(and this stuff will wick in).

with the cam going flat like it did, i would pull it compleatly apart.
pull all the oil gallery plugs and use the brushes on them..

x2 on the oven cleaner..:texas:

I believe this chemical has very harsh effects, on the skin, many years down the road. I believe it causes the skin to stop producing lubricants and the skin just starts to dry up..

plus one on the easy off oven cleaner(the yellow stuff not the fume free) but i would recommend putting it in the back of a pickup and taking to a carwash to rinse it off. messy stuff for the garage floor
